Offensive Talent vs. Offensive Coaching

Let's look back to 2009. Mitchell, Lemahieu, Dean, Schimpf, Landry, Ochinko. All developed into high draft picks (top 15 rounds or better) while at LSU. Coaching wasn't an issue then. I elieve LeMahieu went from a 40th round pick to a 2nd round pick (correct me if I'm wrong please) Mitchell from 11th to a 1st rounder.
I really believe we just don't have any really good offensive players. Katz reminds alot of Ochinko and Rhymes is similar to Lemahieu (little less pop, little better average hitter). Katz would have hit 7th at best on the 2009 team and Rhymes would have been a good two hole at best. They are hitting 3-4 in this lineup.
In my honest opinion this is much more of a recruiting issue than a coaching issue. Recruit more athletes and better hitters. Period. Remember seeing Landry and Mitchell roam the outfield?? A 6-4 freak at second base? A pure left-handed stud in the 3 hole? It's LSU. Get the players and the coaching will look a hell of a lot better.

Rhymes had incredible season. Unfortunately, he hit his slump when we needed him most. IMO, hw would have batted 3rd in '09.
Mitchell was a high draft pick but he struggled a lot vs LH pitching.

The OP is saying what i've been saying all along. good post. so many people want Javy fired and that's fine, maybe it's him too. but the talent isn't what it's used to be.

I believe Mahtook was also playing some late in the season as a freshman in 2009. If he were on this year's team, he would easily be the best hitter.

True to a certain extent...
but their hitting approach is terrible.
RR is the only player that consistantly stays inside the ball. The lack of quality plate apperances regardless of outcome is alarming.
And they are brutal at making adjustments.
That is why they got embarrassed by what amounts to a good high school pitcher last night (81-84mph 2-seamer with a curve and change piece).

I'm as disgusted as anyone about the performance(or lack of) this weekend, but how do we have no talent and sorry coaches and still win the SEC. Must have been a real down year for the conference?!?!

He did struggle a lot when it came to lefty's but he did get on base whether it was a walk or HBP, and we all knew what happened when he got on base

One stud starter, one very good starter (Nola), and a very good bullpen. We were lucky and won a bunch of one run games. This team was really not much if any better than last year's team except last yr we got very few breaks and this yr we got a good # of breaks.

Aside from Mahtook, who had more talent alone that needed little "coaching", Javi isn't responsible for the 09 teams hitting prowess. I think that lies with Rooney and Godwin. They recruited those kids and brought them along. They left in 08 to coach UCF, where they have elevated that program. They scored more runs on SB than we did.
Schimpf, Dean, Clark, Mitchell, and Ochinko were all pretty polished hitters prior to 09. Sanchez had little to so than just manage them. Larry Coker syndrome basically.

Stony Brook's strengths this weekend were LSU's weaknesses and it was glaring.
I won't argue the talent angle, but...
1-9 SB could bunt, hit for contact, force a deep pitch count, were smart base runners.
1-9 LSU looks like 6 year olds bunting the ball, have relatively little plate discipline, are mediocre base runner at best.
Those things show me it's coaching.
But the talent and team speed differential can't be coached. It has to be recruited.

a handful of timely hits can mask a lot
For example, look at games 1 & 2 this wknd.
LSU was totally outplayed in game 1, got a few timely hits (happened to be HR which is more powerful & less likely) & squeaked out a win with a hugely unlikely scenario.
Game 2, SB throws a complete game 3 hitter...a couple timely hits & LSU wins and is going to Omaha.
None of that changes the fact that SB is a better team with better players that outplayed LSU this wknd.

+ stellar infield defense including Ross blocking a lot of wild pitches and improved throws to 2B.

Agree about SB, the most disciplined team at the plate I've seen all year, they all were able to see the big picture and made every at bat count.
