After reading the few bourbon/whiskey threads it's inspired me to start stepping up my taste in what I drink. I started with Basil Hayden's and it's really great. So I stopped by Phillipe's today in Lafayette to see what they had. I compiled a list that I thought I would enjoy thanks to Dr. Beardface's tasting reviews and opinions. (All links to his tastings are in post 12 of THIS thread)
I was excited and surprised to find a bottle of Jefferson Presidential Select 18yr for $90 so I quickly grabbed it since it was the only bottle on the shelf. I also picked up a bottle of Elmer T. Lee.

Cant wait!

Both are in my inventory, although Elmer took a hard hit tonight. Rainy night seemed to be calling for a good brown liquid smothered in ice. Good pickups-you will enjoy!

Take this with a grain of salt but from what I have read Elmer T Lee is the same juice as Blanton's which gets rave reviews around here. Not to say that they are aged the exact same way and definitely not the same durations but they start there life as the same white dog. I love Elmer T Lee and dont like Blanton's.

As for the Jefferson the same principle applies from what I've read to it and Pappy Van Winkle, they start as the same juice. But there has also been discussions on line that say that they are actually barreled in the same warehouses. If that is true Jefferson is a steal at 90 dollars versus 150 and up for PVW of the same age.

There are a lot of bourbons that are sisters of other bourbons on the market. The large producers in an attempt to hedge some risk will sell some of their stock to small distributors who just bottle and market the bourbon.

Hope you enjoy them! The Elmer T Lee is my favorite everyday bourbon and the Jefferson Presidential Select is some fine bourbon for those special occasions.

They do both come from the same mash bill (Mash Bill #2) at Buffalo Trace Distillery. Rock Hill Farms is also made from that same mash bill. Although there are no official age statements, many think that Elmer T Lee is one of the younger age ones and the Blanton's is in the middle and Rock Hill Farms being the older of them. All three are great bourbons in my opinion.

There's some controversy on this one, but we do know that the barrels from which Jefferson Presidential Select come actually were bought in the early 90s from the Stitzl-Weller distillery when it closed. This was the distillery that produced PVW. There's no indication whether it was from the mash bill that produces the 15, 20, 23 or from some of their other stock. What I do know is that it's a great bourbon at the price.

Rye seems to really be catching on lately. Not so much down in the south, but I hear up in the Northeast, it's really big. I like a lot of the bourbons with higher rye content, but I haven't really been too impressed with some of the regular ryes.

Can't say that I've tried too many ryes, as it can be hard to find a decent selection. Lately ive been going with ri 1. I like it. Makes a good sazerac.

Had a glass of Elmer T Lee on Saturday night. Excellent stuff. Had a small glass with 2 cubes of ice. First sip had a bite but after that it was great. Can't wait to make some other purchases soon.
