At Torrey, they did it by world rankings, which was just ridiculous for galleries.
Tiger, Phil, Adam Scott (who had climbed all the way to #3 in the world at that point)

I love seeing the USGA's pairings. Some of my favorites this year:
Carl, Charl, and Charles
Keeping the Koreans together.
I am a little disappointed that there doesn't seem to be a "best player to have never won a major" pairing.
And you know Tiger and Phil both looked at these pairings and let out a collective, "frick!"

No, they openly just do pairings for ratings, galleries, and all that good stuff now.
Tour does them by category A (winners), B(top 125), and C (rookies, q-school, etc.).

Not for the US Open. They group them how they see fit.
The PGA Tour does groupings by category that are supposed to be random.

Apparently because of the proximity of the 9th hole to the club house, they will be starting off of 9 instead of ten. Weird I know.

They still do this. Notice the McIlroy, Donald, Westwood pairing. That was just the first year they started it and it has continued since.
