I'll admit, I'm old-school and only have a PS2. I'm a big fan of the Final Fantasy games (have beaten VII and X many times) and plan to pick up XII this weekend.

Anyone here played it? How does it compare to the other two?

What was "MEH" about it?

Id pick it up. Has a legit battle system. Story is meh, but still enjoyable.

Meh as in "Meh, it's okay but not great"

Ok, didn't know if there was something specific that caused a MEH.

It's not as immersive as VII or X. As mentioned, the battle system is nice, and the gambit system is bad arse. But I never got into the characters or their stories in XII.

And you can see all enemies as you travel - no more random encounters. That sucks IMO.

I prefer this myself. Adds a tiny big of strategy to running around, as opposed to a random fight when you are just trying to get from point A to point B.

This always annoyed me with old RPG's. When I wasn't trying to fight anything, I would get popped left and right. When I was trying to grind, all the creatures seemed to be on break.

No shite. And it was always the worst when you were trying to level up a particular skill you didn't know you needed until a boss fricked you up with ease.

This game would give you a heart attack whenever you'd have a fight. It was the most harsh noise and screen distortion I would ever see. I think it was to keep you awake during late night gaming sessions.

I thought XII was great, I understand I'm in the minority, but the battle system was by far the best part about it. Storyline was decent, but I don't care about story all that much. The battle system was by far the most unique battle system in the FF series. It plays more like an action game and you don't even have to do anything during combat. There are endless combinations to mess around with.

Or doing a side quest, like the monster arena in FFX, and you only need 1 more of 1 fiend.

Much more fun to play than X, VII is better all around though. Story is on par with X imo, but not as good as VII.

FFXII was good, but not great. It was better than X and XIII, but it can't hold a candle to VI, VII and IX.

Pros: Great battle system, good leveling system, great presentation.

Cons: The story was decent, most of the characters sucked, and there was too much grinding.

eta: Side note - FFX sucked with the exceptions of Blitzball and Auron. The rest of the characters were super lame, and the voice acting was atrocious.

I enjoyed XII a lot, primarily for the battle system as everyone else has stated. I enjoyed the higher number of spells and the greater emphasis given to status effects (if they're in the game, they should matter.)

It also looked pretty damn good for a PS2 game.

The story and characters do suck, but I've never enjoyed an FF story, its always been lame weird Japanese shite to me. It wasn;t so bad that I had to stop playing as in XIII though.

The battle system is what made me hate the game. As a fan of square and FF games, not having a random battle-turn based system made the game not even worthy to be in the FF family, imo. Small hijack, the demo for the new one is even worse. It's sad my fav series of games are becoming this. I guess square isn't very familiar with the phrase "if it's not broke, don't fix it"
