Something kind of poetic about Zdenek Zeman returning to Roma in both his own and Totti's twilight.

I like the hire with an eye to the future as Roma is overflowing with promising young attacking talent and it's hard to think of a manager with more success bringing out the best in young players than Zeman. For those unfamiliar, Zeman's attacking/pressing 4-3-3 can make Bielsa's look a bit reticent at times.

I like the hire from a tactical standpoint, but what do Roma hope to achieve with him? I assume CL is the immediate aim, but I don't think they're quite capable of winning the Scudetto yet.

Do Roma simply expect him to make the job attractive again for higher profile managers in a year or two by getting back to the CL and showcasing the young talent? Or do they think he'll stick around long enough to get them back on top of Serie A?

The 4 managers that Baldini/Sabatini approached were AVB, Montella, Bielsa and Zeman. So, really the desired tactics were already decided since all these managers are fairly similar.

The more immediate concern is that Roma owns arguably around 10 of the 20 better young (18-22 yo) prospects in Serie A/B and that's not including the younger players already playing like Borini, Lamela, Pjanic, Bojan, Kjaer etc . . .

I think Zeman's success developing younger players was clearly the number one concern.

I think he was preferred over Bielsa/AVB simply because he's also such a legend that he'll be given a lot more leeway from the fans if there's a slow start than LE was (Who was also brought in with an eye to re-tooling with youth).

It's also clear that team leaders like Totti and De Rossi love Zeman so the locker room dynamics surrounding his legendarily difficult training regimen seem less of a concern. IMO, this was always Zeman's problem in taking over clubs filled with veteran players.

Also, he comes at a lower salary which is probably the difference in also having funds to add one more Serie A ready transfer with a higher salary to what would be possible if we were paying AVB, for example.

In the best case scenario, of course, he'll be successful and Roma will take a CL spot this year. Really, it's not that far off as only Juve seems all that much stronger with Milan next but then the same group that all challenged for third this year and probably Inter and Roma will be the 2 of those who do more this summer to strengthen their chances.

The goal has to be CL right away and Scudetto in a couple of years when the youth matures.

However, it can't be far from the management's mind the job Zeman did (before the backlash against him blowing the whistle on Juve's steroid scandal convinced him to step aside) in preparing the team for the scudetto under Capello. Zeman, of course, built that team.

Edit added: I just realized this but with Zeman and Sabatini being the most chain smoking combination of Sporting Director and Manager ever we may stand in good stead of getting a lucrative Marlboro sponsorship. Maybe cigarette shaped bench covers mimicking Sevilla's hot dog ones?
