My family and some friends are going to Panama City next week. We are going to rent a pontoon one day to cruise around see the sites, go to Shell Island and maybe do a little fishing.

Any tips on where and how to catch a few fish would be appreciated.

Should be able to catch some Mackeral near the jetty. They'll hit Berkley Gulps under a float or retrieved. I reccomend a leader cause they will cut your line. I don't eat them but they r fun to catch. Also, June 2nd is a free saltwater fishing day. Not sure if u mentioned when you'd be there.

Agree with Joe I have had some nice trips catching Mackeral near the jetty. You can also walk the beach toward the bay along that same pass, they have some areas down the beach just a bit where the drop off is very close to the shoreline and the fishing is good there as well. The walk will also allow you to get away from the crowds since a lot of people fish from the rocks.

Definitely use a leader or you will lose a lot of tackle. I went with a 60 pound flouro leader and it did the trick.

Bubble rigs were my bait of choice and you can cast them a mile if you fill the float about a 1/3 of the way up with water. (they sell them at most of the bait shops in town and they may also carry them at the shop inside the park)

Yes, I have a house about a quarter mile from where you will be renting the pontoon.

The main fish you will catch in the bay will be Spanish, Specks, Reds, and Blue Fish.

You dont have to go near the Jetty to catch fish....this is how is goes.

For specks, fish around the Big Pier with the restraunt by the Bay Point Hotel. Also fish the Ocean side of the Bay around all the big boats.

You will see the bay exit towards the Jetty...fish around the channel marker with shrimp and gold spoons. If you go towards Shell Island just pay attention to the depth and try and find a drop off between the weeds and the sand.

Thanks guys. We are going down Saturday the 2nd, don't know when we will rent the "toon". Are single day or weekly license available? Expense? Do the fish and game guys leave the pontooon renters alone?

Again thanks for the help.

If I remember correctly you can buy a 1 day lic, really not worth taking a chance on not having it if you get checked.

Best get the license. Every time I renew mine, I swear, I get checked the next day.

Now, I want to know if the scallops have come back over at St. Andrews. I'd like to partake in the harvest. We had them here in Pensacola Bay one year, but never again since.

Do you have to have some sort of license or permit for scalloping?

I beleive you can keep 2 gallons (still in the shell) per person. Or you can sit on the back of the boat and eat fresh ones and drink beer then catch more.
