I understand the monetary reasons behind creating a new bowl, but why not use the Sugar Bowl or Cotton Bowl for this game?

Both bowls have traditional and regional ties to both conferences and would seem the logical choice. What prevents this from being the case?

This new bowl would also seemingly reduce the significance of the Sugar Bowl, who currently hosts the SEC Champ if they don't make the BCS National Championship.

remains to be seen. the bowls are gonna go thru a "shakeout" period. the sugar bowl will survive and do well. having to bid against JW for this game may be tough. i'd rather go to NO a million times more than dallas for a ball game but JW can probably outbid the sugar. hell, their concessions prices alone should be illegal.

That's my only concern if the bowl goes to Dallas; Jerry will get his Steinbrenner paws all over it. Screw the Cowboys!

Lets be honest, this entire game is a sham. One vs One will never happen, so why the hell even have this? It annoys me that instead of working out a B1G and PAC12 kind of arrangement where you must play a team from that comference, the SEC and Big 12 are twiddling their thumbs and playing tiddly winks. Scratch the glorified Cotton Bowl and look at the big picture, the entire idea was brain dead. But what else can you expect from people who think with their wallets?

Sort of, but not exactly. I think it's simply a shot over the bow of the Pac 12 and B1G to warn them of what will happen if there's no playoff. There could almost never be a legitimate NC game without one or both of the SEC and Big XII champions, and with this agreement, they will be unavailable unless there are "national semifinals" for them to play in...in other words, give us a true 4-team playoff or forget playing any more legitimate NC games. It's a good way to put pressure on them because they can't really reciprocate. The SEC and Big XII are clearly the two best conferences, and they could just tell everyone else to go to Hell and play each other for the unofficial title of "best" in the nation. They would probably outdraw the Rose Bowl.

Partly this. It's also a shot at the bowls, who have been getting a free ride for decades. We're seizing the money pipe from those freeloaders.

Nuts4LSU - This bowl isn't being created as an annual destination as opposed to the National Championship game. A Pac-12/BIG champ doesn't turn down a title game to play in the Rose Bowl. This game is being created to compete with the Rose Bowl and start a tradition.

My main concerns are below:
1. Current SEC Champ goes to Sugar if not in National Championship which is almost guaranteed yearly
2. The new playoff format will be four teams resulting in three games. There are four historic bowls. So one bowl would be left out annually, or the games would rotate between two bowls.
3. The Sugar has a lot to loose if the SEC Champ doesn't travel to Nola annually, and the new bowl format marginalizes the importance of the traditional four bowls.

My father's friend is on the Sugar Bowl board and plays cards with a very senior member of TAF. Neither of these individuals seem concerned about the state of the Sugar Bowl from my father's perception although the city would certainly lose a tremendous revenue generator annually.

I admit that I have not studied up on this but my basic understanding is that if the SEC and / or Big 12 champion(s) qualify for the playoff then this game would get the next choice from each conference, no? So, assuming the Big 12 and SEC qualify each year all that is really happening is the two conferences will choose to have a good match-up at Jerry World and not be stuck with an ACC or Big East opponent (or Hawaii / Boise St) in a bowl game. I think the Capital One bowl is getting cut in line...

Because the Sugar and Cotton Bowl execs get all that money, and none of them is named Jerrah Jones.
