Add a teaspoon of vanilla to that filling, and it sounds good... I skip the pecans in the crust because some of my family can't eat them

I've always referred to them as Cajun brownies or Smash cake.

Grew up in St. Louis, this was a staple. Here's a recipe from my school's PTA cookbook, circa 1973ish- before Paula Deen (or even cable).

1 box yellow cake mix
1 stick butter, melted
3 eggs
1 8 oz pkg cream cheese
1 tbsp water
1 lb powdered sugar
1 tsp vanilla

Mix well cake mix, one egg, melted butter and water. Spread in a 9 x 13 greased pan. Beat two eggs with powdered sugar, cream cheese and vanilla. Pour this over the first mixture and bake for 40 minutes at 350. Sprinkle with powdered sugar.

I just made this with the new dark chocolate cream cheese, because it was what I had on hand. Fresh out of the oven, with chocolate ice cream, wow

Thanks, Rutiger and Sticks ... Auntie Buck made this for a family bbq and it was a hit. She had been wanting to make this, just didn't have a good recipe.
