Smoking a 6.5 lbs boston butt at 225 deg.

it's been in the smoker for 1 1/2 hours and internal temp is already showing 160 deg.
I've tried to move the meat probe in the event it was touching any of the bone. it seems to be reaching temperature rather quickly. Anyone else have this happen? Every other boston butt has taken about 12 hours. Internal temp of the smoker is steady at 225. trying to figure out what, if anything, has gone wrong.

im pretty sure it gets high quickly then stays around the 160 area for a few hours.

sear the boston butt roast for 45 minutes rolling it every so often.
wrap in five layers of heavy duty foil and roll it every thirty minutes for two and a half hours.
it will be like babyback ribs.
don't waste your time smoking it. put it on the grill

Looks like the thermometer was screwed.

Yeah, that seems like not near enough time to get that hot at 225. I would guess 6.5 lbs would take at least 8 hours total.
FWIW, I rarely use a thermometer. When it gets tender enough for your tongs to go through, making it hard to pick up...it's done.

Still the butt will hover around 160-165 for quite a few hours. It will make you think something is wrong but it's not.

Correct. Its a phenomenon called.... shite can't think of it.
But if you go to amazingribs.com you can find it and all kinds of shite you probably didn't realize about smoking/bbqn... good stuff on that site.

The good thing about boston butts is they're very forgiving. I wouldn't worry about it and just cook it for as long as you normally do.
