Surf fishing in Fort Morgan

Got a house on the beach for the next week and dont think Im goin to spend my money on guided trip for 2 damn snapper.
Gonna bring a rod and bait caster and do a little playin around while the kidos are on the beach. What is a basic set up? I saw someone mentioned a while back a type of spoon. I also have some saltwater traps that someone game me. Think they are 3/4 or 1 ounce. Can you salt water guys give me the basics on a set up for casting and a type of bait to buy for tight lining? What pound test? Just trying to keep it simple. Not expecting to catch anything to eat really but would be a plus. Hell I wouldnt even know what I catch prob, not a salt water guy. TIA

For specks...
Soft plastics on lead heads-cast and retrive or fish under a cork. Or topwater baits-Top Dogs, mirrolures etc.
Anything shiny will probably get strikes from Spanish Mackeral or bluefish- use a leader though.
Really not sure what they have in the surf but I imagine the same as La.

We stay in Fort Morgan every year. I've never fished there, but I heard that if you go all the way to the end of the island and wade fish there you can catch a ton of redfish. May be worth a try.

These for Spanish.
The western tip of Ft Morgan is called Dixey Bar. Some of the biggest redfish you will catch are there. Fish it the last two hours of a falling tide. Just let your line drift with the current with a 1/2 oz egg weight. For these you will need heavier line. 30lbs leader and a 5/0 - 7/0 hook. I use 4-6 inch croakers for bait.

I just got back from Ft. Morgan. I was catching lady fish on gulp shrimp and a lead head just swimming it back. Fun enough... they pull.
I tried some other stuff, but nothing else really did much.
Some guys were tight lining dead shrimp, and squid. All I saw them catch was hard heads.
Disclosure: I only tried it right in front of our beach house. There are a lot of areas you can drive to and walk in access on the bay and gulf side.

Yes, carolina for red. For spanish I put a swivel before the crippled herring. And I use a
light rod for the spanish. 2000 spinning would be good. 6-10 lbs test. Bigger for reds. I use a 4000 spinning with 30lbs braid.

I just use flouro for spanish and reds

My boss is heading down there this weekend and would like to know it you need an out of state liscense to fish? Or is a LA fishing liscense good?

Pretty sure you can get a 3 day license or maybe a one day pass. I highly doubt a La license is acceptable since I am sure La requires Bama residents to get an out of state license.

Dixey Bar is the place to be for bull reds. Like others have said, fish live bait or cut bait behind a carolina rig with a 1-2 oz sinker. Fish the falling tide and chunk it as far out as you can. In front of the beach house fish peeled dead shrimp on a very small circle hook and light line for whiting. Find deep spots along the beach for them. They are great fried up fresh.

Now, as for Dixie Bar, if you look at the charts, you'll see it's too far to wade out to unless it is almost DEAD calm. Even if it was, I'm not sure you could wade to get out there. I caught a bunch of hardheads, but it passed the time. Sand Fleas also work well out there.
Give it a shot...its pretty cool to fish with an old Confederate Fort at your back. Makes you wonder if there wasnt some young lad back in '62 that tried his hand at catching something before that damned Farragut came along.

I'd also suggest shrimp for pompano.
Regarding Dixey Bar...it's the best place around THERE for bull reds. It's no better than Grand Isle, Venice, or anywhere else for bull reds though. But it is about as good...
Bring a kayak and let one pull you around for a while.
