I'm thinking about passing along my old favorite .22 rifle to my grandson. Just wondering how old were you when got that first gun that was 'yours'? BB guns are excluded here.

9 years old. Got a .410 crack barrel. Lucked off late one evening standing by the barn and some geese came over. Pulled up, pulled trigger and one of the sum bitches fell.
Sister ran grabbed it and yelling with excitement. Grandparents (it was at their home in the country) thought I'd shot her.

My first at age 8 was a Remington .22 Scoremaster.
I gave it to my brother when I went into the service and he still has it. It's a bit weathered, but still shoots as good as it did when it was new.

this first gun that was actually mine was a ruger 243. I think I was 12-13

My first was a Ruger 10/22 around 11 or so. Ruger GP100 at 17. IMHO it depends on the parents and how they are raising the child. I gave my daughter a BB gun for 5th Bday and using that to judge how she handles it. Planning a 22 bolt action, may the cricket for 6th Bday or Christmas
