I think there is no doubt that the loss of Ross killed us defensively. Ross is one of the best defensive catchers in the SEC and without him behind the plate, Vandy ran around the bases at will. With a couple days of practice coming up, does anyone think Moore, Slaid or Dozar might get a look behind the plate? Or is Snikeris hands down our best defensive option with Ross out?

If they have not caught since little league, than no. They would not be a better option if this is the case. We would have to just hope for the best with Ross and a speedy recovery.

Powell and Slaid have just been catching in the bullpen. I don't think Dozar has seen reps at catcher since 2010.

well this certainly isnt the case but Snickeris still probably is the best option. Moore's arm was subpar the few attempts he made to throw out runners earlier in the year.

I think you will see Dozar and Moore spending a lot of time behind the plate this week in practice. Remember, rosters are limited to 26 (I believe) players for SEC games and the SEC tournament. Especially for the tournament, CPM will need as many pitchers on the roster as possible. Because Ross's surgery was late Saturday afternoon and with an afternoon game on Sunday, there was virtually no time for Dozar or Moore to prep for catching duties.

We may have to put Rhymes behind the plate.

ETA: remember last year Ross wasn't exactly setting the world on fire. Maybe Snikeris will get better?

From an early-season game program (App. State series), Tyler Moore, Matt Fury (What ever happened to him?), and Evan Powell are listed as Catcher/Infielders, and Jackson Slaid is listed as a Catcher/Outfielder. Could one of them be pressed into duty. Maybe CPM could/should experiment with them Tuesday evening vs. Nicholls State?

Matt Fury is the guy in the bullpen coaching during the games. He is not in uniform, dresses like the coaches.

Now, had we given Jordy much playing time before it was mandatory, maybe he would have done a better job.

other than one glaring weakness, snikeris didn't do such a bad job. that weakness, of course, is that he can't make the 90 foot throw w/o standing up and doing a crow hop type thing. how in the world a kid can make it to the college level w/o being money on the stantard 90 foot throw is beyond me. i know the throw to second is longer but he can't even make the throw to third w/o standing and hopping. it really is something i've never seen in college and damn rare in high school. no way the kid was a catcher in high school unless he batted over .400 with substantial dingers to his credit.

Last year none of the catchers could make that throw. I guess Ross worked harder during the off season?

I don't remember Moore earlier this year, but he caught in high school, so it's still fresh in his skill set. No way in hell Powell, Fury, or Slaid get behind the plate. It'll be either Moore or Snikeris. With Edwards back we could see Moore back there

Raph, who just had shoulder surgery? Have you seen his throws from the outfield?

Obviously he has someone working out at catcher in case Snick would go down. He's prolly working out a few.

I don't remember Moore catching earlier this year but I saw him play last year in high school 6-8 times and his arm was pretty good.He could throw better last year than JS has been throwing.

I think CPM leaves JS in the lineup b/c he's hitting ok. I would at least try Moore catching and Katz at first and Edward in the of with JS dh ing. It couldn't hurt in the next game imo.

Maneri says it's Jordy until Ross comes back. Gotta figure out how our rights can hold runners on first better than they do now.

you could be a little more specific. if you disagree with my observations you could at least give me the decency to challege a specific. i think snikeris did a credible job behind the plate. disagree? i think he sucked at throwing the ball to 2nd or 3rd. do you disagree with that? have you ever seen a catcher throw the ball from the croached position?

Snicks throws would be fine if anyone tried to steal the pitchers mound. Arbys throws from center are pathetic also.

This is what made me say that. The kid is catching at LSU, you think he didn't catch in High School? C'mon man.
