I have always LOVED drums and drummers. I see a lot of you on here and it made me wonder how many of you play professionally. Meaning drums are not like guitar. I think they are cooler but most others do not. Not like you can break out some drums at a party and play. Drums take some real estate at your house. They are a commitment. Especially if you are not playing for people. Just wondering. The noise and the room they take up in a home make it a tough instrument to play.

I agree 100%. Both are different and both are awesome things to play.

Depends how big and loud your amp is and how many effects you use. Electric guitar run through 5plus pedals and a 100w tube isn't a quiet instrument to play and takes up a lot of space. I do agree however with you. Drums take up alot of space and are loud as hell. To cut down on the noise, you could get an electric drum kit.

IDGAF.

I am old and married and secure in my manhood.

Even electric drum kits take up space if it is near realistic. I understand how they absolutely cut the noise thing with headphones.

An acoustic guitar takes up a corner of a room but drums take up a room. And piss off some neighbors.

OP- I agree. Percussion is such a vital part to music and drums are a beautiful instrument. Also got to love the "reckless" personality most drummers have.

You could realistically put a set of electric drums in a corner of a room....

Electric sets really arent THAT big

I've gradually gone away from drums to mainly playing guitar, but still love drums. Finally brought them to my house from my moms, so maybe I'll start playing a good bit again. I prefer guitar because I can make more sounds and actually do melodies, but yes, drums are cool and very fun.

I play but not professionally. I have always been intruiged by drums and drummers. I taught myself(which is not hard to do) and bought a small set. Over the years the set has grown, now my kids play with me. My oldest daughter is actually pretty good

I've played guitar for most of my life, but my girlfriend got me an electronic set a couple years ago for Christmas and that thing is so much damn fun.

Bought my house for my drums specifically. The bonus room over the garage is perfect for my kit.

I play, although not professionally. I've been playing on and off since I was about 13. Lately just jamming with some local guys on an occasional Friday night. I like the relaxed attitude we have about playing. Not like we HAVE to be at a club or anything. Families get together, we eat, drink a little and jam for a few hours. It's a good gig.

been playing drums for 18 yrs - moved to LA at one point with my band to play out there and did that and had a blast; now waiting to buy a house so I can jam out again....in an apt and not feasible due to noise of course and I tend to play LOUD when I jam out - I miss it a lot and even did the electronic thing for a year before selling it - was a really cool set but just not my thing - my father in law and I are gonna build a custom drum set one day (he's a great wood worker and has an awesome shop) and that set will be my baby and I'm looking fwd to a custom room for it one day - wife already approves

electric drum kits

The electric drum kit is a vile bastardization of the drum and, IMO, has no use other than for rudimentary practice. I've been drumming since 1987 and, during that time, I've had to sit in once or twice on an electric kit. Each time, the kit was an upper-end set of Roland V-Drums, and they were still awful.

I am a pro player of many instruments. I've been fortunate enough to be able to build my own studio at my place with no neighbors to bother. I traded some time for a drum set with a bandmate, and he hooked me up with a pretty cool kit. I had no idea how to play it or tune it, but thanks to the magic of youtube (How to play drums) and some practice I'm proficient enough to play with other peeps and even did the drum parts on one of my songs. The kit does eat up some space, but if you have a dedicated room with some noise damping material on the lid and walls it can be a great space. There's been many a time where I go straight to the drums instead of the guitar simply because I have the urge/need to beat the crap outta something!
