What is responsible for the Superhero movie popularity?

I have always been a fan of superheros, but many of the older superhero movies were not that great. For example, I never really cared for the Superman movies (played by Christopher Reeve) and the Tim Burton Batman movies were okay.
I am old enough to barely remember the old Incredible Hulk series, but I think I liked it because my brother watched it, however; although I saw all the Burton Batman movies, I was always expected to be disappointed and I was. Then Spiderman (2002) came out and thats when all the craz seems like it started (with good reason IMO).
Was Spiderman actually the start of the popularity of superhero/comic book movies? Or do you think X-men helped Spiderman start it all? Or neither?

Superhero movies are the "Action films" of our times. Think of the glut of rough and tumble heroes of the 80's (Arnold, Stallone, Van Damme, etc.). Those films could be counted on to bring visceral entertainment in spades. But over the recent years, and despite some noble attemps, that genre has faded (and maybe for the best, for now), and superheroes have taken up the mantle.

1989 Batman was the start.... At least to me.

X-Men re-invigorated and re-invented the Superhero movie. Spiderman cemented it. Batman Begins and The Dark Knight transformed it and sealed it.

This coupled with the built in popularity and familiarity brought on by the presence of the comic books and animated shows on television. It's easier to adapt a good comic storyline than it is to create a big budget action movie from scratch. Hell some of the most popular movies in film history have their origins in either print or from loose tales of another story.

That's what I was tying to say, but couldn't think of how to do so.
