Anyone getting excited about this? Not 43 days until camp opens... 43 days till we can watch a real friggin game (even if preseason)!
The Predator was the only other #43 consideration. With his dynamic play and just being named the The Most Versatile Player in the NFL I gotta go with Sprolesy.
I was never a Bush hater but he is the best comparison by saying Sproles has proven TO BE all we hoped Reggie WOULD BE. Love his toughness particularly. He runs like he has something to prove every play.
When I think Sproles these are the pics that come to mind: 5'6" with a running style even lower to the ground- hard to find, jitterbugging- tacklers grasping at air, great teammate- a whole lotta show but without the boating.

Just goes to show the poor coaching and even worse upper management of the Chargers. The team has talent and gets talent but doesn't know how to use it or keep it.

Sproles is the guy to go with, but I wanted to see if anyone remembered this guy:
Ashley Ambrose. He had two stints with New Orleans after playing for the Colts and Bengals. Once in 1999 (then he left to play for the Falcons
) and came back in 2003 & 2004.
He started 34 games for us, had 12 interceptions and 1 touchdown and 115 tackles for the Saints in those three years.
I just remember thinking he was going to be our first good CB to save us from the likes of Alex Molden, Je'Rod Cherry, Mark McMillian, J.J. McCleskey, Kevin Mathis, Darrin Smith, etc.

But he doesn't get the nod cuz of never really fulfilling the hope here and only was on the roster a short while, even though he kicked around the NFL a while.
A case can be made for Darren Sharper. A contending defensive MVP in the most glorious year in Saints history- 9 INTs for 376yds, & 3 TDs. BUT that was it. Injured in 2010 he was done at age 35.
My selection is Chuck Muncie. He might have been the most talented RB in Saints history...

more than stats, the years of 'Thunder & Lightning', he combined with Tony Galbreath to form one of the most dangerous RB duo in league history- especially in those days when running back by committee was rarely found. Unbelievable combination of power and speed. Unfortunately he was caught up in the apex of coke use in the NFL. A lot of his yards might have been supercharged. After a 1198yd 1979 season (first 1000yd NO rusher) he was traded to the Chargers. He had 5 productive years there, leading the NFL in TDs in 1981 with 19. Then there were the horned rimmed glasses. It certainly made him one of the most distinctive looking Saints ever. If it wasn't for coke I truly believe he could have made the HOF. He never stopped spiraling down until serving 18months in a federal pen for coke dealing. Finally he got it together and has an youth mentoring foundation.
The '78-79 Saints were arguably the most talented Saints team that never broke .500 After 10 years of expansion team blues they were the first great hope years with Muncie leading the way.
Not only was he one of the best Saints draft picks of alltime but when traded to SD for a 2nd Rd pick, THAT pick ended up being the first Saints HOFer, Rickey Jackson.

The dearth of talent at some numbers can make it a challenge deciding who might be best, some there's only one possible even if not that great. Not surprising that some with not that many years experience that have been on the roster during the golden years since '06 are the choice. Like...

critiqued plenty by many but still a vital ingredient of the team success since 2006, Roman Harper. Led the team in tackles and sacks last year. Rock steasy 72-81 tackles each year since becoming a starter.

I'm as critical of Harper as anyone (well, probably not) but he's been a solid player. Played in and started 83 games for the Saints. 17 sacks, 4 interceptions, 406 tackles and two pro bowls. He's not a cover safety. We know that. But he's a good player and a hell of a Saint.

Ummmm, not a lot to choose from for #40. Going with the guy I remember the most besides Mike Bell and Dalton Hilliard who only wore #40 for a year.
Robert Massey - CB drafted by the New Orleans Saints in the 2nd round (46th overall) out of North Carolina Central in the 1989 NFL Draft. Appeared and started 32 games for the Saints. Had 5 interceptions and 165 tackles. Then he went on to play for the Phoenix Cardinals, Detroit Lions, Jacksonville Jaguars and New York Giants. He actually made the Pro Bowl in 1992 for the Cardinals.

He is now a secondary coach for the Tenn Titans.

I remember being excited that we got Danny Wuerffel who was the Heisman winner and Troy Davis who was the runner up. I thought Davis would actually be good and expected Wuerffel to at least be a back up...Needless to say, neither did much in the NFL.

I think it was, only lasted 3 more years in Washington (31 TDs) and was done. These days he is very limited in how much he can even walk. See the Muncie note referencing Rogers and coke use at the Pro Bowl.

Mayes played for the Washington State University Cougars, where he became All-American and finished tenth in the Heisman Trophy race. Mayes set single-season and career-rushing records (1,632; 3,519 yards) with the Cougars, and established an NCAA record for most rushing yards in one game (357 vs. Oregon in 1984). That record remains the Pacific-10 Conference record.
He was drafted in the third round of the 1986 NFL Draft by the New Orleans Saints. He proceeded to win the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Award that year. Although his NFL career was hampered by injuries, he was named to the Pro Bowl twice. Mayes played five seasons with the Saints before being traded to the Seattle Seahawks for the final two years of his career.
May 1, 2008 was elected to the US College Football Hall of Fame.
After football, Mayes became active in efforts to better educate at-risk youth. He would later earn a master's degree and return to Washington State University as an administrator.
He is now the regional director of development for Sacred Heart Medical Center in Eugene, Oregon,[1] where he lives with his wife Marie and his two sons Kellen and Logan Mayes.
His son Logan is a three-star recruited linebacker at Marist Catholic Highschool in Eugene Oregon. He committed to play at Washington State University, following his father's footsteps.
He is one of the only three Saskatchewan natives to make it to the NFL, the other two being Arnie Weinmeister and Jon Ryan.

Solid thread. I never clicked on it because I couldn't figure out why we cared so much for a preseason game.
Wish you would have started a couple of days earlier.
Two glaring omissions already, IMO.
WR has always been my favorite position, so these are the guys I usually remember the most.

Just keep grinding blues! I'm actually starting to get excited that were 36 days away. I know the defense will be vanilla, but I'm ready to see what players have been moved around and see some of the new linebackers. I also want to see if Chase Daniel has improved any. (Don't know why, but I'm a fan of the kid.)
Hopefully that will stop all the boutny/contract talk. Ready to get back to some football!!!

They are at first, but it wears off when you get 3rd and 4th stringers in. If you've never been to a game in the dome, it's always kind of jaw dropping walking in for the first time.

Just bought 2 tickets to the Jacksonville game on my birthday. Upper deck, but still a good view. Haven't been for too long.
