There's a decent chance that one of the 8 guys who got mdf'd this week could've shot 65 today and made several thousand more dollars.

The solution to this is easy. Play better

i love it.

I think the team with the best overall record should get homefield.

this is still an arbitrary way to choose home field advantage since the leagues hardly play each other. maybe less arbitrary than the all star game winner though.

But what else is there? Best interleague play record between the two teams? I think it just comes down to who has done better through the course of the year gets the reward.

I see the point about arbitrary nature of this method, though.

precisely why the all star winner is not that bad of an idea at all and blown way out of proportion by most people.

if a team in the AL has a better record by 2 games over a team in the NL, but their opponents winning percentage is .480 as opposed to the NL team's opponents winning percentage of .515 how exactly can you "tell" who accomplished more?

You can't. I guess that's why this is so difficult to pick a concrete method. Unless they formulate some kind of algorithm a computer can solve and give a value to the team's overall success and compare, I don't see what else there is.

And I don't really get all worked up about the All Star game scenario. However, I just don't like how overly arbitrary the result of that game is compared to homefield advantage in the World Series.

how would you decide it?
Team with the best record.

Why reward the entire league for a meaningless game when you can reward the actual team playing in the World Series for their performance over the course of 162 games?

No, the MDF (made cut did not finish) rule effectively is a second cut after Saturday when more than 70 are still playing and they want to reduce the tee times so they can end the round as close to 5 to meet TV times.

Those who make the 36 hole cut but not the 54 are still paid and receive FedEx cup points but they don't have the chance to increase that on Sunday because of TV.

Complete crap.
I disagree, if a player isn't in the top 70 after Saturday, too bad. He should have played better

It's still a MUCH better way than giving it to the winning league of a meaningless game.

But what's the logic behind it?

The game is an exhibition, completely meaningless to the players playing in it.

I don't know, it just doesn't make any sense to me.
