MARCEL JONES Scouting Reports, Videos, etc

Nebraska Cornhuskers offensive tackle Marcel Jones is a tall prospect who could possibly develop into a left tackle after some development. In the immediate future, Jones would fit nicely on the right side. He lacks ideal strength and will need time to blossom into the position. That said, all the potential is there for him to become a starter-level player in the NFL.
Jones is a good run blocker. Given his great size and length, he can dominate at the point of attack even without great strength. When opening his stance off the snap, he struggles most against speed rushers. His girth helps him eat up bull rushes with a decent body lean. The problem comes in having to change direction and consistently get off the line with velocity.

Once coaches really start to work with him, they're going to want to tweak his footwork so he keeps his frame along his center of gravity. Jones has a tendency to lean rather than keep his feet under him. Since he's only ready to play right tackle, it's unlikely he is drafted in the first couple rounds.
--------------------

Graduated in the top five percent of his high school class. Also played basketball as an Arizona prep, although he missed his junior football season because of injury. Redshirted in 2007. Appeared in all 13 games in ’08, drawing one start. Started the first 11 games at right tackle in ’09 before a right ankle sprain sidelined him the final three contests. Sciatic nerve pain kept him off the field the first 10 games in ’10 before he returned to split time at right tackle with D.J. Jones. In ’11, missed the first four games with a shin injury but returned to start the remaining nine games at right tackle.

Positives:
Has stature to block out the sun — big-boned with long arms and a giant wingspan. Has a sturdy base to anchor and thwart a charge. Nice bend and balance. Surprisingly quick out of his stance with a smooth kick slide. As a junior showed he could run Denver Broncos 2011 No. 2 overall pick Von Miller wide of the pocket. Latches on and controls smaller rushers. Has sheer mass and strength to shut down the inside rush. Strong down blocker. Can work his hips around and seal. Able to climb to the second level and pick off linebackers. Good character.

Negatives:
Is tall and can be outleveraged when he lets his pads rise. Heavy-legged and thick-hipped. Struggles to adjust in space. Does not use his hands violently to punch — feels for contact and is not a mauler. Bench-pressed 225 pounds only 13 times at the Combine, the lowest of all offensive linemen. Can do a better job gaining extension and using length to his advantage. Could stand to improve his ability to sustain and finish more consistently. Does not breathe fire. Back stability needs to be examined and long-term durability is concerning.

Summary:
A giant, relatively inexperienced protector with intriguing athletic ability and flexibility, Jones has starter-caliber tools and developmental potential for an effective position coach to mold. Can appeal to teams such as the Cowboys and Cardinals if he checks out medically.

re: MARCEL JONES Scouting Reports, Videos, etc

Looks the part. Is a thickly built offensive lineman with a stout lower half, long arms and the natural strength to win on contact. However, he's a tight-hipped kid who struggles to sit into his stance, bends at the waist and really struggles with balance/leverage in the run game. Exhibits a "plus" first step and quickly is able to get into defenders off the football and create a little bit of a surge. However, he's very linear, struggles with balance through contact, easily gets overextended and will fall off blocks. Plus, he routinely is upright off the ball, struggles to gain leverage and his hand placement gets low because of it negating his natural strength. Exhibits the natural power to eventually create a bit of a surge through contact, but doesn't get much of a push vs. better defensive lineman. Showcases some natural step and seal ability on the edge and has some range into the second level for a big guy. But, it he has to play fast, as he struggles to break down and seal.

Isn't asked to pass protect routinely in Nebraska's option offense. Doesn't possesses the range to consistently reach speed off the edge and will get overextended lunging into contact in order to try to engage. Isn't comfortable in space, pops upright, looks tight hipped and doesn't exhibit much laterally quickness. Has the length and power to be stick and anchor vs. the bull rush. However, has a tough time mirroring through contact vs. any type of lateral quickness.

Impression: A good-looking tackle, but is tight hipped and struggles with leverage. His size and initial quicks might give him a shot, but he is going to have a tough time ever fighting for playing time at the next level.

That's about all you can ask for in the 7th round. Sounds like there's good potential for development and we certainly could use depth at tackle.

This guy seems like the our sleeper pick form this draft and could eventually turn out to be our best pick in 2012. I like the fact that he is rarely injured and has quick feet. The fact that he is under par in space wont matter with the fact that Brees likes to move around in the pocket and rarely is on the run. Good Pick for the 7th round.

husker bio:

Two-Time First-Team Academic All-Big 12 (2008, 2009)
Two-Time Big 12 Commissioner's Fall Academic Honor Roll (2007, 2008)
Four-Time Big 12 Commissioner's Spring Academic Honor Roll (2008, 2009, 2010, 2011)
Three-Time Brook Berringer Citizenship Team (2009, 2010, 2011)
2011 Outlook
Senior Marcel Jones is hoping for a healthy 2011 season that will allow him to move back into a prominent role on the Nebraska offensive line. Jones was limited throughout the majority of 2010 by a back injury, but became part of Nebraska's regular offensive line rotation in the final few weeks of the season. A year earlier, Jones manned the right tackle spot for most of the year before being sidelined for the final three games by an ankle injury.

With the departure of four veterans from the 2010 offensive line, Jones will also be counted on for leadership up front. The 6-7, 320-pound Jones is one of three tackles with extensive playing experience, along with sophomore Jeremiah Sirles and senior Yoshi Hardrick. Jones' impressive stature and athletic ability make him a natural fit at the tackle position in the Nebraska offense. In addition to his on-field talents, Jones is a two-time first-team academic All-Big 12 selection, and was a second-team academic All-District selection in 2009. A construction management major, he is on track to earn his bachelor's degree this December.

My bad I let the TV get the best of me. Lombardi said he was rarely injured in college.

Guy had the worse bench press for Oline at the combine.

Managed 13 reps, and the next lowest was 19.

He is gonna need to hit the weight room if he wants to make it in the NFL

Holy crap! That's weak. I could do more than that at 18 years old and 210lbs.

What did he do in college? Apparently he did not work out. Guys that big can bench 225 about 10 timese even if they never worked out.
If that is the case he is lazy, and won't make an NFL team unless he gets off of his fat a$$ and get to the gym. If he does that, then we'll have a steal for the 7th. If he stays lazy, then it's just a wasted pick.
