Gonna play the girl card here. What are the pros and cons of putting in a chip?
2008 F250
Cost? Installation? What does it do (in simple terms)?
GO.

More power and fuel efficiency (I think)

Pros:
More power
better fuel efficiency
Cons:
cost a lot
can void warranty
can blow your engine up

I got 5-6 more mpg with mine and the egr/dpf delete.
It took me a year of fuel savings to break even on what the mods cost.
It is now cositng my 5 k to replace the stock tranny that could not handle the minimally increased HP after the mods.
The dealer tells me the tranny failure was likely due to the programer.

BP, I don't doubt that it was a contributor, but it had more to do with it being a dodge.
I have a tuner, and it does so many things. It will calibrate and maximize the output of anything you put on your truck (header, cold air intake etc.) it has settings for fuel efficiency, and you can Change air and fuel flow options. But mine was about 600

How much (approximate) is a lot?
I wouldn't get one until after 100k (I'm at 98k now)
and yikes.

Somewhere in the $500 range for a good one

I think most companies(JET and Hypertech) stop at around 95,96,or 97 for the last models they make chips for. Could be wrong, but that is what I remember
Get a Spartan Phalanx programmer, some DOC/DPF deelete pipes, and an intake and be set. You will get higher than 20mpg and have more power than 99% of the people driving on the road. Dont waste your time on any other programmers except the SCT Livewire with custom tunes.
Cons are you breaking out the purse
Tuner = $1250
Cheap exhaust = $350-$600
Intake = $250-$350
So for $1850-$2200 you can drive like a boss
People run this reliably all day long

Damn. I didn't realize diesel tuners are THAT much more expensive than gas.

Shitty ones are $350-$550 but dont make any kind of power and have generic tunes. The Spartan has 25 tunes pre-programmed on it, including Tow tunes. The SCT Livewire comes with some regular programs on it, and is I think $900, but you have to pay for custom tunes to be put on it. They set up tunes for your altitude, humidity, and air temp
They also come with in-cab monitors that are meant to stay in all of the time, but you can take them out if you dont like looking at it. Better programmers also learn the truck and go from there

yikes. that's a lot of money. sure as hell beats 12-14 mpg I'm getting now.
I'm gonna have to save up for a long time.

I'm going to pretend this is BBMcGee installing her tuner:
