Top Five Most Polluted U.S. Cities are in California

Top 10 Most Polluted U.S. Cities

This must be embarrassing to California with all the emphasis they put on holding down pollution and being a leader in government regulation and green living.

So you vote for holding no convictions/beliefs as being a foundation of your beliefs at all?

The geography that makes California so attractive also makes it prone to air pollution. The prevailing winds are from the ocean, but there are mountian ranges that prevent the pollutants from being blown away. Just imagine how bad the pollution would be if California wasn't taking the steps it does? The air quality in California now is better than it was back in the 70's.

The high pollution levels in these areas have more to do with the geography of these locations. These California cities might actually have lower emissions per capita than other cities around the nation, but the topography of the land encourages the air to stagnate.

This.

And, this is akin to saying "Louisiana leads the fight for Coastal Erosion issues...yet, has terrible coastal erosion issues"

One can be the reason for the other.

and also the reason why, just because policies and laws are good for California, does not mean that it is needed everywhere...

Exactly. I live in Los Angeles and have visited the other four cities on the list. Visalia is actually a nice place and the gateway to Sequoia National Park. The pollution from the valley gets trapped by the mountains of the nearby Sierra Nevada. We travelled through Visalia this past December and the pollution was horrible. But this is the double-edged sword of the area's geography.

Is this also why libs from California think that Greenhouse gasses are destroying the planet? Things look good elsewhere. We can breathe. Maybe they should get out more.

We've come a long way since the 1960's. I'm old enough to remember the Great Lakes being so polluted they were dead and could not support life in it's waters. Manufacturers were spewing constant pollution. Our biggest problem these days seems to be vehicle pollution.

Thats because at one time American agreed that rivers should not catch on fire and that air should not make pigeons cough. Now both sides are so partisan that if one is for it, the other is against it.

No one wants pollution. Policy decisions come down to economics.

Everyone is partisan to some degree, don't knock it.

true, but factors like rent control, building codes, green spaces, etc. have driven folks further out, which has increased commute times/distances.

no Tx

Air Pollution is WHY California has strong laws on the topic.

the weather and millions of cars combine to produce smog.

another more useful way of stating your thread subject title is
California has the 2nd largest area of the lower 48 AND
so much of the southern and valley areas of California are subject to hot clear weather that the millions of cars there produce smog in record amounts.

Alaska is bigger and has fewer people than any of the large cities of California. Tex does not have the concentration of people that California does, nor the weather pattern.

Data is so easy to frick with.

California is a very productive state. Part of the consequences of production is pollution. Couple the production with the geography, and you get pollution problems.

"Holding down pollution, government regulation and green living" have all benn attempts to address EXISTING pollution problems. Have the environmental policies put in place been effective?

That depends.

If you want to look at it as they still have the most polluted cities, then no.

But if you ask the question, "Would these cities be even DIRTIER without the environmental policies?" Then the answer would probably be, "Yes".

We're talking about the eighth largest economy in the WORLD. To imply that Californians just came up with a bunch of green laws one day just to try to look cool would be missing the mark. They are trying to address problems that have existed for a long time.
