After watching it so many times, the Vietnam part of the movie has grown on me a lot.

Boot camp doesn't look very fun.

Do the kids today realize how hard R. Lee Ermey was in this movie?

Some of the scenes in Vietnam are powerful, but much of it feels late to the party. A solid movie, but one of Kubrick's weakest.

Barry Lyndon, The Shining, Dr. Strangelove, Eyes Wide Shut, and 2001 are all better than FMJ.

FMJ is by far my favorite Kubrick film. Honestly, it is the only one I can take multiple viewings of. I think all of the movie is great and never understood the hate for the Nam parts.

It's the best part. Animal Mother and 8ball.

I wouldn't say it's the best, but it's definitely awesome. It's amazing how much hate the second half gets. I understand the first half is greatness and Hartman and Pyle and all that, but Vietnam brings everything home from the first part...the realism of war, the detachment from emotion, killing machines, etc. While the boot camp half is great, the Vietnam half helps make it even better.

The first part of the movie is the best, but goes downhill when Pyle blows his brains out.

Agreed. And most of the best lines.
