for mother's day. I am not a coffee drinker, and was wondering if anybody had any recommendations or more so, what to stay away from. There seems to be a very large range in prices.

they always seem like they are more trouble than they are worth honestly

Put 100 bucks on a Starbucks Gold Card. By the time she uses it, she'll move on to something else.

I had one back in the day that was a Krups, but eventually I just stopped using it. If you guy one you should get one that does coffee and espresso so when she stops using it you won't have an "extra" appliance hanging around.

I bought a refurbished Saeco Serina from Seattle Coffee Gear.com around Christmas and love it.
One thing to consider is a good grinder. You can make decent espresso with a cheap espresso machine, but you can't make decent espresso with a junk grinder.
Seattle Coffee Gear does lots of Youtube videos of tests and trials. Might be worth watching some before picking a final machine and grinder. I use one of the lower end grinders that they recommend.

Also worth noting, since I bought the espresso machine, I drink very little other coffee at home.
It worked well since my pregnant wife stopped drinking coffee. I can make a single cup and I go through a lot less coffee than when using my french press. I also like the option of having a cold latte. Lots of times on summer weekends, I want coffee but not a hot cup of liquid.
This is one of those appliances you either love and use lots, or use for a month and never again.

Get a Nespresso machine, preferably a Latissima model, so you can make cappucinos and lattes. The coffee's very good, and it's simple, no hassle and very reliable. You'll have to mail order the pods, but it's hassle free. I've had one for four years and love it.

Get a Nespresso machine,
We have a Pixie model and it makes good espresso and lattes. But the pods are expensive if you drink a lot of them...and Padma is their spkesperson.

Just got a Nespresso and I really like it. It is incredibly easy to use and the pods are about $0.75

It depends on how snobby you want to get with it. I loved the idea of the nespresso. I even had a Pixie ordered from Williams Sonoma and called to cancel it before buying the Saeco.
I have 2 points of contention with the Nespresso machines.
1- having to buy pods from Nespresso
2- (and the biggest issue) The pods are too small for espresso. A typical espresso shot uses 7-10 grams of ground coffee. These pods are 5-6 grams. Even worse, you use one 5-6 gram pod to pull a double shot that normally requires 14-16 grams of coffee.
You certainly get a quick cup of espresso. It is not really a good cup IMO. If you try to pull too much water through coffee you get a watery/bitter cup.

Based upon Seattle Coffee Gear I ended up with this:
Capresso EC100
as my first Espresso maker.
Very happy with it.
Don't use pods, Community Coffee Dark roast. Used daily for espresso and cappuccinos.
