New to deer hunting, bought a rifle and not familiar with sighting in the scope. A buddy let me borrow this

but I was not comfortable with it and it's so light that it just jumped all over the place and I don't think my shots were good shots when trying out different ammo this weekend.

What do you guys use? Gun vise? Bags?

I'm thinking bags would be better.

I think since this thing was so light, that the recoil was making it pop up and jump all over the place. Maybe the bags will allow me to control the gun better?

A few bags and a good bench. Making sure a proper bore sighting is done prior to starting the sighting in process will save you a good bit of aggregation.

A lead sled is awesome if you can find one.

It was bore sighted and after shooting about 30 rounds, I definitely saw a consistent pattern in my shots. Just every now and then I'd have some inconsistent shots. I didn't try setting the scope because it was way too windy and I was mainly just trying out different ammo to see which one my gun liked best and to get a feel for the rifle. I hope to sight it in this weekend.

A good table and sandbags is what you need. I use a front rest and a rear sandbag, but a good rest can get expensive.

What Infidel said.

And the table being solid is important. We do ours in concrete. But none of that's going to help you until you learn how to take a shot properly and do it consistently.

How big are your groups?

Brand new barrels will spray the bullets all over the place a lot of times. I wouldn't worry to much about the first 20 shots at least if you see some jump out side of the norm.

Put a little weight on the bench and that setup should be killer.

Actually last year I used a couple wooden blocks to rest it on just to check the scopes

I have used Both sand bag/rice bag mine actually has rice in it and i have a lead sled use a 25 pound weight in it. With that being said I like the lead sled the best eliminates most of the recoil when doing multiple rifles it is also easier to reacquire target after shot is fired.

This

It seems elementary, but I always make sure there is 0 wind, it made a big difference with my 22-250

I've never actually sighted in a rifle from scratch. All ours were bore sighted out the box or at the score, I just zeroed it and check them once a year and if they get dropped.

Depends on the ammo.

1'' grouping: Remington Core Lokt 150gr, Winchester Xp3 150gr, Horandy SST 150gr

2'' groups or worse: Federal 150gr, winchester cheap stuff 150gr, Hornady SST 165 gr

Gun is brand new, was bore sighted, but this is only at 50 yards b/c the wind was blowing so much Sunday at the range it kept blowing the target down at 100 yards every time I'd walk back to the table.

Woodworth LDWF range has sandbags at every bench. Also ear and eye protection.
