What is the law on keeping your dog on your property? while riding my bike the other day, big dog left his yard, crossed the highway and started chasing me in non-playful way. i hit him with some pepper spray and he stopped. what are my rights in this? Should i confront owner?

You could make a complaint, but isn't it more fun to spray them?

You could time your trip with oncoming traffic...And watch the horror unfold.

I would not confront the owner of a dog I had maced. It might go sideways on you.

It depends on where you live, but most places have leash laws.

Oh my. You should have peddled faster. Or gotten a car.

Your rights? I'm not sure you have any "rights" other than to be able to peacefully ride your Schwinn cruiser. Now if you get bitten, then you can sue the owner, but you better hope they have homeowner's insurance.

Absolutely. Then post what develops from this convo.

Since you already sprayed the dog, you may have forfieted your "rights". Dogs can bark at you all day, but if you spray it because it is barking at you and then it bites you, the dog acted in self defense.
I have an old man who walks the road early in the morning and my lab runs down the side of my property barking at him. He always threatens to sue me because she "barks aggressively". One morning I watched him step on my property and hit my lab with his cane and shoot her with a bb gun. At that point he forfeited his right to sue and I told him I hope she bites the shite out of him.

I definitely wouldn't walk on someone's doorstep and inform them that I had pepper sprayed their dog. I would just hope Cujo learned his lesson.

My grandma when she was younger used to carry a riding crop to knock the shite out of any dog that mess with her on her walks around the neighborhood
I think if the animal crosses onto public property to harass you, you have the right to defend yourself. Check with local law enforcement though.

This is correct.

People have varying views on animals but many people see them as an extension of their family and they are treated as children. The dog could have been chewing on your leg when you sprayed it and they would still see you as in the wrong somehow.

Hopefully the dog will leave you alone after this incident.

Also is there any chance you over reacted with the spraying? I ride my bike frequently and there have been many dogs that will growl, run up to me and bark until I leave its "territory" which is usually about the length of the property. Although i have had some scares over the years no dog has ever actually bitten me.

the dog did cross the highway to chase me. i did just find out that there is a leash law. if it happens again i can call in a complaint. if a dog causes me to wreck/injure myself a complaint will be the least of my worries.
