The Dark Knight came out almost four years ago. I dug up this old thread so we can take a look back and see if our initial reactions to the film have held up over time. I feel like I overrated it a bit after multiple viewings, and there's nothing wrong with that. That's the nature of watching movies, especially ones you are extremely pumped to see that live up to your expectations. So, take a look if you want.

I thought the whole scene with the two boats was excellent the first time around...now it seems rather silly. But it is still a great movie

It holds up very well IMO. There is just so much going on that it takes a few viewings to even pull it all together.

The first time I watched it seemed to tell a story about the Joker. The next few times I felt like it was about Harvey Dent. Now when watching it I can really see the tragic story Wayne has to go through. He losses his childhood love interest/connection to his parents while at the same time having to cover for the crimes of the one person he thought would allow him to return to a sense of normal life.

The Gorden speech at the end is priceless.

So why didn't Gordon tell some units in the area of Dent and Rachel to go get them from their warehouses? Seems like that would have been 100 times faster. I get Batman not trusting the cops to do that but Gordon would have.

It's good, but it has a ridiculous amount of problems. I love Batman, and I wanted to love it as much as everyone else, but some of it just annoys me too much.

For the record I knew you were all doing this.

This movie lost me at the ferry scene. It is still good and Heath does do a good job, but Gyllenhall is unwatchable in every scene, this unhinged loon does stuff that Al Qaeda would only dream of, there are a couple of glaring problems, plus Morgan Freeman deciding that Wayne finally crosses the line with the cell p0hone stuff after all the other stuff they have done.

Anyway, rant over. Good movie, the boner all the fanboys had for it though was a little much.

We should pull these threads out more as anniversaries for big films come along.

I hated the way they used two face and it was far too long. Overall i still like it but I've always liked Batman Begins more.

There were certainly people warning everyone not to overrate the movie, but I also wasn't one of the greatest movie of all time people either. I just thought it was the best film of 2008, but it wasn't.

I've always found it funny that the Joker is so supernatural. He can move hundreds of pounds of explosives into public areas and go unnoticed... including the barges, in which the city takes his advice on and don't bother with a full search. He's master of time as well: the prison bomb and the rigged shade in the window. He's also immune to explosives.

It's something you really don't notice at first, but the more you watch it the more of a distraction it becomes -- for me anyways.

Eh, I overreacted some. I posted right after I got back from the midnight viewing.

It's still the best movie theater experience I've ever had and I expect it to remain that way for awhile.

I just watched it again two weeks ago and it's still a top notch action movie.

Well he did steal a crap ton of Mob money, yeah he burned alot too, but he could have easily paid money for people to set-up the barges, etc. and not ask questions.

I've always thought of the Joker as having an ever expanding branch like network of ideas/situations/etc in the works at all times. He waits for the right opportunity to execute them, but most of them never see that opportunity. For instance, I imagine if the barges would have been tipped off for some reason, or he would have been taken to a different jail, etc. he would just have another option ready.

When he speaks about not having "plans" he is talking to long-term society like movements.

The Dark Knight Rises doesn't have as much hype compared to The Dark Knight at this point in the year for comparison's sake. I'm sure the hype/excitement will get really high when the new trailer comes out but it just doesn't seem like it's as intense as it was in 2008 when it was #1 for 7 or 8 weeks in box office?

And even before Ledger's death, TDK still had a ton of hype; was just even more intensified after he died/people running to see it. Don't feel that as much now. It'll definitely be one of the top grossing movies this summer, but I don't know about being the highest grossing film of the year.

I think the top summer box office is gonna be between The Avengers, Men in Black III, Snow White, Rock of Ages, The Brave, Abe Lincoln Vampire Hunter, Dark Knight Rises, and Spiderman.

That's a lot of movies compared to last summer. . Although I'm not interested in most of those movies...the last Spiderman came out 5 years ago; don't see the point in a reboot so soon. I definitely want to see The Avengers; MIB III doesn't really appeal to me but will see it anyway; I despise Kristen Stewart but Charlize Theron and Chris Hemsworth are convincing enough in the previews for me to see it; Rock of Ages looks kind of cheesy like Mamma Mia did but I like the cast; Have no idea what The Brave is about; kind of eh on Vampire Hunter but I'll still see it; and of course I'll see TDKR opening weekend.

I remember The Dark Knight having much, much more viral marketing, and it was all extremely well done.

Like VoteForHarvey.com or something like that. Another was a Gotham News Channel.

Where is that stuff, Warners?

That's what I'm wondering too. The movie is less than 3 months away...not much PR other than a movie teaser and a short trailer.

They probably realized that only geeks were paying attention to it, and since they're gonna see the movie anyway, they didn't need to pay for it.

It's still my #1 comic book film. We'll see if it stays that way after I see The Avengers on May 4.

That's kind of what I was thinking. I'd love to pull out SFP's Watchmen thread, but I am going to hold off a little bit.
