What is the LSU Baseball "Game of the Century"? (Or NCAA, for that matter)

No. 1 LSU vs No. 2 Kentucky. Epic series for both programs, no doubt.

But what is LSU Baseball's "Game of the Century"?

LSU vs Miami in the 1996 series is going to come to mind, for a lot of baseball fans. But that game is known more for its finish, than for its hype.

And "Game of the Century" is usually a term used during the regular season.

So what were the No. 1 vs No. 2 matchups that would qualify? What is your nomination(s)?

JRod's Nomination: No. 1 LSU vs. No. 2 Kentucky

In Before: Germany vs Pearl Harbor

LSU vs. Alabama in 1997

By far the two best teams in college baseball that year.

When we met in the NC game both teams were 56-13 and it was the first time the #1 and #2 seeds actually met in the final game of the year.

When we met in the regular season they beat us 2 of 3 including The score 28-2 which I can still remember seeing signs of in Omaha. We got the rematch that year. 13-6.

Greatest Matchup of All Time? I'd certainly agree with you there.

Hype going into the game? It certainly had that as well.

But doesn't the final score take some of the luster off of the game. We enjoyed the heck out of destroying Bama.

For example, LSU vs Bama at BDS in football could certainly be remembered as GOTC. But I don't think LSU vs Bama in the BCS game will be remembered as such.

I mean, it's college baseball. So you're going to have to take this "Game of the Century" talk with a grain of salt.

The Georgia series in Athens in 2009 was a big one. They lost in the championship series the year before and returned a lot from that team. I'm not sure if it was 1 versus 2, but it was close.

this...A&M had some ricdiculous record. I want to say like 58-7 or something. An absolutely astounding record to be honest.

That was a big series. I was there and I remember Perno yapping about how we wasted our best pitcher Coleman on Friday and that we were going to wear his arm out by the end of the year. I hate that douche.

Also met twice in the SEC Tournament, splitting both meetings.

No way, not in a chance is this year's LSU/Kentucky matchup even close to considered "the most anticipated matchup in LSU history". Everyone expected Kentucky to come back to Earth after SEC play started, and it wasn't until about 2 weeks ago that people started actually believing that these guys were pretty good.

Back to 1989, A&M had lost exactly 1 home game all year, and LSU had to beat them twice in one day to get to Omaha.

Didn't Georgia end up tanking it that year after the LSU series.

Yes. That series win was not nearly as meaningful as we thought.

LSU won every game that mattered that year. LSU went into Tuscaloosa only needing to win 1/3 to win the sole SEC regular season title. Bama won the first two game, LSU woke up and won game 3, SEC Champs. In the SEC tourny, the two teams met in the winner's bracket final. The importance was to win, and then you only have one more game, lose and you have to play 2 extra games. The SEC final was not double elimination, it was a made for tv championship game. LSU won the winner's bracket final. Bama burnt up their pitching and threw some nobody who shut LSU down in the SEC tourny final, but winning the SEC tourny title was never important to Skip. He just wanted to play long enough to get his pitchers work.

Bama started the same nobody that shut LSU down earlier in the NCAA Championship game. LSU scored 6 runs in the first inning.

Everybody says that this game wasn't that exciting because we jumped all over them in the first, but that was my first game ever at Rosenblatt and I enjoyed every second of it. One of the best moments of my life with my pops.

Damn right. Let 'em crow about that 28-2 game. It gained them nothing in the end.

Well I really wanted to see LSU finish the season with at least one home run in every game that year. Danny Higgins handled that with the first at bat of the game and I was like, "Well, that's done with."

Great answer.

28-2 is sort of like their 9-6.

The cws games come to mind but I will say the Irvine series to close out the box was probably the most fun I have had watching a series from the comeback in game 2 to the drilling in game 3...

Very surreal and awesome experience
