I recently spoke with someone who is involved in a BNI Networking group. I hadn't ever heard of this organization but it looks pretty big and sounds like a decent way to meet other business owners and develop a larger referral base.

Has anyone on this board used BNI or other referral groups? If so, how was it? Did you find it worth the time and money investment?

Thanks in advance for the input

Has nobody here done NBI/similar networking groups or is it like fight club where you can't say anything?

I have been in one. It cool but you have to find the right club. Some places are laid back and some are all about referring business. You can go to the site and visit some by emailing the president.

What kind of lawyer are you?

I am not part of one but I am familiar through other colleagues.

Some groups take it very seriously and could blackball you if you dont seem 100percent committed. Which is fair.

I know some people that get a lot of business off of it, so it may be good to try it out.

Be prepared if you realize that some personalities don't match. The setting can remind you of high school.

Tried them all, actually in 3 different states/markets over the year. Total f-ing joke IMO. They're like a cult.

Personally, I don't want to be forced to refer a piece of business to one particular person all the time just because they're in my BNI group. While the atty in a BNI group might be cool, the landscaping architect may be a total douchbag that I don't feel comfortable referring my clients to. But if you don't "play the game" then you'll get blackballed should they find out you referred someone outside of the cult!

Just join the chamber or some other networking stuff. You'll come out way ahead.

If you're a title attorney, real estate agent, or mortgage and insurance broker, BNI is perfect for you.

If not, nothing beats grass roots marketing.

I work in a general business practice with some wills/successions and a few PI cases...I do just about anything but criminal cases, divorce, and residential real estate closings.

Thanks for the responses.

I'm affiliated with them, absolutely love them. Business is up 40% because of them. As far as the guy who doesnt like refering business because the person is a said "douchebag" sounds like he has a problem himself, plus most groups blacklist, and kick out members that do not help each other or do not have good business practices.

grass roots marketing

Is the best, even in cities as large as BR.

Our two title attorney's do nothing but grass roots as far as I know and they kill it in our area. I do some limited grass roots, but I'm about to ramp it up going forward.
