Defensive alignment for obvious passing downs

Has Chavis ever employed the following: 3 down lineman with Mingo and Montgomery playing as 3-4 outside linebackers? Seems that would produce a formidable pass rush.

It's no Trindon at DE but this sounds interesting.

I think Chavis knows what he's doing in getting to the QB considering we led the conference in sacks last year with 39.

I believe we have gone to 3 down lineman before. But Mingo and Montgomery are normally playing the End spots

So you want to run a 5-2-4 on passing downs?
You must be a professional.

It's April.
LSU baseball team is #1 and playing #2 Kentucky this weekend.
Why worry about the defensive alignment on passing downs right now??!
Jesus, it amazes me the things people will worry about.

Football is a year round sport, sport.
But, OP I think the Mustang Package we already run is just fine.

I don't think he is worried about it.
The thought probably popped into his head and he asked, I don't see the big deal

Depending on the alignment, wouldn't that just be a 3-4? And that could be an interesting defense on any down.

On zone-blitzes towards Mingo's side, we'll send a Cornerback (in many occasions its been TM7) & "fake" Mingo on the rush to get the Tackle to commit towards blocking him-rendering the CB's path to the QB unimpeded.
That's a 3 down lineman look with edge pressure to the vacated side, with Mingo-as fast as a cat as we've ever had amongst our Front 4-sitting in the passing lane that would ordinarily be considered the "hot read" for the QB to throw into.
You still rush 4, but you've got the 4th man on the dog side coming from a slot-corner position with a free shot, & Mingo playing the passing lane.

Not a bad concept but it has a few problems. If you want to run it as a base package, you are stuck with dropping one of those pass rush specialists into coverage. Obvious issues there. The other concept is to rush both of them. Then you're sending 5 and there are much better concepts (fire zones, traps, etc) to pressure with 5. I agree it's a neat personnel package, but it severely limits you scheme wise.

we still couldn't cover the back slipping out in the flats or running the wheel.
just kidding....I think.

Not hardly; it's just that with probably the 2 best pass rushing ends in CFB, I thought this might give our defense something special.

I don't think getting pressure on obvious passing downs has been an issue. To me, the problem was not getting enough pressure from just our front 4 on not-so obvious passing downs. Not knocking our guys or Coach Chavis, but I think this is an area for improvement.
