Considering upgrading RAM on eMachines desktop that is a few years old. Are the sizes pretty standard or should I be searching according to specific model number? Thanks in advance.

You'll need to check the motherboard to make sure you're getting compatible RAM to go in it (as well as how much it will support). Also, if its 32bit OS you can't use anything more than 4 gigs of ram.

Just buy a new computer. You will pay out the arse for older type RAM. It's just not worth it. Use Crucial.com They have a program you can run that will tell you what you need.

What I am saying is you may find your self paying between $100 and $200 to upgrade your RAM, when $350 can get you a brand new desktop that will smoke your old one. Are you buying Windows 7 ? Add that and you RAM together and you may be close to the cost of a new machine.

This. You'll spend the equivalent of a new PC and still have an old e-machine POS.

Use Crucial.com They have a program you can run that will tell you what you need. ======= This is what i would recommend as well. Also consider the cost of the upgrade vs the cost of going new or even used for a replacement computer.

there is some horrible advice in this thread. pull out a current stick of ram from, then google and buy the lowest price. ram is not expensive

geez OT. let the man make his own decisions for christ sake. he may not be able to justify the new pc's at work. as before mentioned, crucial.com allows you to type in make, model, etc of a the pc then gives you the lowest prices online of RAM that matches. check that out first, then if still expensive, i would recommend just upgrading.

What version of Win7 and how much are you paying? and how much RAM are we talking? adding RAM may not be the only thing you have to consider depending on the version. Why not just buy a new machine with Win7 already loaded
