Criteria:

-for 308 winchester
-either BDC or mil-dot reticle
-prefer > 40mm objective
-variable power with max > 10
-less than $700

What is the best I can do with that criteria?

Mostly deer hunting, but I do like to go to the range every month or so and practice distance (nothing extreme).

I have a couple of Nikon's that I really like.

I think they are Buckmaster. Very good scope for the money.

For that price I would probably look hard at a Zeiss Conquest or a Leupold VX3

I'm a leupold fanboy, so I say a leupold VXIII with whatever reticle you desire. One thing that is generally true with scopes is you get what you pay for.

There is a buncha good glass in that price range. Others are zeiss and nikkon.

ETA: Do not get anything without a lifetime warranty, because all leupolds have one.

Are the best deals going to be found online or in person?

Search for subMOA's .50 BMG thread. He linked a website that had some good scope deals.

I have always just bought my scopes at a local gun shop.

Shop around on here. This site shows a very clear pic of the reticle on most scopes

OH yeah, leupold gets my money. Like someone else said, definitely go with a lifetime guarantee

Yes. I have found them to be much cheaper online.

Go here and look in the buy/sell section. Buying used will get you a ton of glass for a good price:
