Directv and the weather

Thinking of making the switch from Cox to Directv. My biggest concern is the reception going out during the storms that can easily pop up in South La. Anyone have any problems with the reception, specifically in the NOLA/Metairie area? Any other pros/cons of directv vs Cox are welcome as well.

I have Direct TV and it only goes out in hurricane like conditions. Other than that, I have no complaints.

Mine goes out if it's a complete shitstorm outside and even then, it only goes out for 10 minutes max. Even if the weather doesn't change, it doesn't stay out long at all.

The only problem I had was when it would get real windy and a branch from a neighbors yard would dip in the line for a second. Outside of that, it had to be storming real bad to knock out the service.

I've heard that HD channels go out for a little while during storms, but the standard channels almost never go out. Any truth to that?

A digital satellite signal is either on or off. No in between.

For me, the HD signal goes out much more frequently than the regular signal did. The HD dish is bigger, so I guess it catches the wind more.
If you get HD and it does go out, make sure you call those pricks every time it happens. I ignored shorter outages and when it finally totally crapped out, it had been 93 days since the dish was installed, so a service call was $49.95. (90 day warranty on installation)

That makes sense to me, but it contradicts what several people have told me.

And about how often is that? I can live with 10 minutes once a week or so, but not with much more than that.

it really depends on trees getting in the way... if the wind is going to blow a branch in between ur dish and the satellite, u will lose signal. our dish is installed in a good spot and never loses service, my friend has the same thing and loses signal during some storms.
we had a signal during a hurricane running off a generator

I don't know about any service other than DirecTV, but their HD and non-HD signals are transmitted from different satellites. Or at least thats what Customer Service told me. My dish is mounted to my deck, facing the water - trees or other obstructions impeding reception.
I don't watch a lot of TV, but if it's storming, I pyschologically prepare myself for the possibility of not seeing the end of whatever I'm watching. Honestly, I think my current problem is a lousy HD dish installation. But windy conditions (or heavy cloud deck, even though that's not supposed to impact the signal) would occasionally knock out the service before I had HD.

FYI - The weather is nasty this afternoon and the service is fine. I'm in Madisonville.
