Question about Mad Men Season 3, Episode 1 (SPOILERS)

Okay, so I've started watching Mad Men, and I've watched the show up until the season 3 premiere. WTF did I just watch?
Most of season 2 was dedicated to Don coming to grips with cheating on his wife. I mean, she had kicked him out and everything. At the end of season 2, it seemed like he had really turned a new leaf.
So WHY did season 3 open with Don engaged in yet ANOTHER affair? It doesn't make any sense. It's almost like last season didn't happen.
Also, are we supposed to assume that Duck Phillips got fired after his tirade?

I figured that, but it just seemed like they jumped RIGHT into everything.
