Why do baseball managers wear the complete team uniform? I've never really understood this. You don't see football coaches running out on the field in full pads and a helmet. You don't see hockey coaches skate out in the full hockey get up or basketball coaches run out in team shorts and jersey.

Would you rather them wear suits on a dugout floor full of seed shells and dip spit?

It is pretty strange seeing an old fat man wearing the whole get up.

I really don't care that they do it. I'm just wondering if anyone knows why or how it started. The player coach thing makes sense.

Because of the three major sports, that's the only one where a 60 year old guy can get by wearing the uniform.

LULZ at Tom Coughlin wearing a Giants uniform
SuperLULZ at Van Gundy wearing a Magic uni...

Baseball isn't the only sport that had player coaches.

Because before a baseball game the coaches may be hitting fugos, while the manager is throwing BP, go to a game major league an hour early you'll see

It saves on suits.

They didnt used to make all that much.

Having the team provide your clothes, which you use while sitting on tobacco juice, seems a good adjustment.

Connie Mack, who owned the A's when they were in Philadelphia, wore a suit and tie, even in summer. He managed and owned.

In baseball the managers are allowed on the field. A manager can go out and talk to a pitcher.

In football, basketball, & hockey the team comes to the bench/sidelines.

as most people have already said, it dates back to player managers...then it was kept because of tradition/the uncleanliness of dugouts and such.

You can't be on the field without a uniform on...so managers early on donned the uniform to go to the mound and talk to the pitcher.

While that is certainly true, there is no reason that they don't just wear team issued athletic apparel like football does.

Also would be more merchandise for the teams to sell and market.
