Went to a chevron station today and noticed on my receipt there was a 25cent charge for "swipe" bringing my total to $4.30.

I didn't have any cash, and I was only buying 2 drinks. No warning from the cashier or anything, is this legal to do to customers?? Not concerned about the quarter just wondering here....

I'm pretty sure it's against most major credit card companies policies to impose a fee or min purchase for card users.

I've noticed independently owned stations saying they have a minimum purchase with debit/credit purchases. IMO this bullcrap and I just leave.

It used to be, the CC companies have changed their user agreements now.

They are allowed to charge a fee if the price is under 10 bucks (not 100% on the actual amt) but my user agreements state that the fee must be displayed and verbally noted before completion of the transaction. It doesn't make since for us so we don't charge the fee.

Just curious… Is their country of origin the United States of America?

Yea this gas station also serves decent poboys, as far as I can tell it is American owned.

So guess I'll read AMEX agreement to see where they stand on minimums.

It might have changed but a few years a go my mom bitched out one of the gas stations because they wouldn't let her use her card because she didn't reach the minimum. She has worked in the credit card business her whole life and called up master card and reported them. But there really isn't much you can do.

No need to read that, check the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act.

If they get charged by CC companies, why is it bullcrap if they pass their cost along?

My problem is not them trying to recoup/reduce any cost. It is they demand you purchase a certain dollar amount if you wish to make a purchase with a debit/credit card.
