Anyone have any experience re-grooving Irons?

I have a set of Ping i3s. I've bought multiple sets since, but I keep coming back to them. I need to re-groove them though. No tournament standards necessary, strictly performance.

Foggy on:

-U vs V(I understand U will give more spin, but what about the durability of the club etc)
-Type of tool?(I've heard everything from certain commercial golf products to a common hacksaw blade)
-Technique/skill involved to properly re-groove.

I used this one Club medic. I only used it on my wedges and had great success with it. I think I remember reading they should not be used with chrome plated, forged clubs because it will remove the plating and cause rust, so I avoided using them on my irons. When you use it, you should only use it in a pulling motion, not pushing away from you. Hope this helps.

Eta: U grooves and V grooves are a product of production. All clubs made before a a few years ago have U grooves, thus your clubs will have U grooves and you won't be able to change that. Just make sure you get a tool designed for U grooves, not V grooves.

I'm listening. What should one expect in regards to the monetary cost of the said service?

ETA: Thanks to each of you for the help I will use each of your tips. I'm particularly curious about the Vaseline talk. I have a large jar on my nightstand. *all jokes aside, is this just to assure one doesn't cut too deep?*

Apparently, they don't. I'm surprised they don't.

Vaseline on your driver will impart zero spin. Drive will go far and straight, but it's illegal.
