ESPN's Masters coverage

Why would you get the rights to air the first 2 rounds of the Masters and air 18 episodes of sportscenter all morning instead of letting people watch Tiger's, or the other golfers, first round? The Masters starts in the morning, don't start your coverage at 1:30.

The Masters controls the time slots and coverage.

What is the reasoning behind why they don't want people to watch?

This. If ESPN could show it from 7 am to 7 pm, they would.

I'm pretty sure it's not straight live coverage. More like live highlights.

Because it is the Masters and they can, not being rude but thats the best answer. They dont have to make money from ads or who plays in their tourney, or coverage. It is all ready paid for by the members. Need to thank Exxon, ATT, and IBM for them to show it.

Don't believe so. Masters.com (along with DirectTV, not sure of other providers) will have live coverage of two featured groups starting at 11 am, as well as coverage of 11,12,13 starting at 9:45, and coverage of 15 and 16 starting at 10:45.
Other than that, the only live TV is provided by ESPN on Thursday and Friday.

No golf channel coverage at all. Masters.com or the masters app is your best bet for early morning coverage

The Masters wikipedia page has a good synopsis of the broadcast policies. I didn't know about any of that either until this thread caused me to go check it out.
quote:
Significant restrictions have been placed on the tournament's broadcast hours compared to other major championships. Only in the 21st century did the tournament allow CBS to air 18-hole coverage of the leaders, a standard at the other three majors.[69] Only three hours of cable coverage is scheduled for the early rounds each day.

Wasn't that long ago you didn't get to see the first two rounds and only saw the back 9 on Sat and Sun....The Masters Club controls the coverage. Be thankful you get what you do because it's privately controlled.

Very true to an extent. Augusta doesn't need CBS/ESPN's sponsors money that much, they just want CBS/ESPN regardless of the honorable donor to them. And at that, they still would prefer the mystery of certain coverages. I wouldn't be suprised if their coverage retreats at some point just to increase demand.

I agree, my only thought is that today is after the presser, I learned that the Masters is trying to extend the game to young people via media and video games. Like now you can see a good amount of coverage on masters.com or the masters app before espn/cbs coverage. We should be thankful that the Masters is starting to progress and present this tournament to us. Because it is the greatest in golf.

Thats dumb. I wanted to watch Tiger tomorrow morning, but apparently thats not going to happen now. He will be done by the time the coverage even starts.

They need to get off their high horse.

Again, the Masters does not care everything is paid for already by the members. ESPN/CBS are the ones paying for coverage and hoping for good ratings.

Why because a private club can afford its own championship?
I dont agree with it at all but like I said we should be thankful/lucky that we get to see anything any at all and the Masters as made great strides at tiger woods golf, masters.com and the masters app to allow us poor folk to see most of the coverage
Just listen to the players interviews, they are honored to be invited to play at the masters, majority will admit its the best major and majority will admit they strive to be apart of the elite club

the PGA would be pressuring them to have tv coverage if they didn't already. It's not a good message to send to increase ur sports tv viewership "you aren't even good enough to look at where these guys are playing"
