They seem to get into our house starting around this time of year. I re-sealed doors, windows, and I keep outdoor lights off. However they still find a way in. Anyone have any good solutions? FYI we rent and the homeowner does not want to fork up cash for good termite protection.

ETA: not sure if they are subterranean. They are the flyng type that just show up for a month in late April/early may that swarm around lights.

This.

Ortho makes a product called Home Defense that works. You will have to dig a trench about 6 inches around the entire structure and apply.

BUT, if you are seeing them it's probably too late, there will be many more in the walls. Home Defense is a preventative.

The ones flying around are formosan....

If you are in NO....get used to them through may....doesn't mean you have them just that they are close

Those of you that don't live where formosans do....

Ground treatment doest stop or slow thhem down

All subterranean termites swarm in the spring, along with ants. They could have "flown" in from a mile away depending on the wind. If the owner doesn't want to pay for treatment I wouldn't waste my money treating his house. If you are finding lots of them inside the house they may be swarming inside...I mean they might be eating on the house and accidentally coming out as swarmers inside(not where they would prefer to swarm). Formosan termites are subterranean termites and usual treatment is in the ground. The problem with formosans is that the colony size is usually way bigger (eat more wood) and if there is moisture issue in structure they can make it without going back to ground. Thats when you see them fumigate the whole house.

what a fricking idiot...

termite protection isn't shite compared to the value his house is going to lose if he had a tenant that didn't give a frick or know about the termites
