Baitcast reel question (Left Handed)
Posted by computerguy on 3/27/12 at 2:37 pm00
Got a Daiwa Exceler baitcast combo with some credit card points i needed to get rid of and it is in the mail.
Question:
Can i simply switch from a right handed standard retrieve to a left?
If not any ideas on how one would go about swapping the reel out for a left handed edition? Since i got it from points on a credit card they really don't have any options and I am cancelling the card as soon as the items arrive. (another story)
Tried to search online to see if this was an option but i didn't see an answer only right or left handed reels which made me think that I couldn't simply swap from right to left.

If they carry that reel at Academy I'm sure they'd let you switch it out. They take back everything.

That is unfortunate.
-Thanks for the quick responses
I wonder how a store would react if i walked in and asked to swap it out for a left handed edition?

I would doubt it unless they were affiliated with where you got it. Most people cast with their right and swap over, I'm like you and enjoy doing it right.

I will call academy and see what they say, thanks.
"Most people cast with their right and swap over"
No kidding this is something that always blew my mind. I could never understand why this was the standard way of casting/retrieving. Just doesn't seem very efficient.

Wait for Chadboy to tell you how deal with Academy before you call. Where is that a-hole anyway?

I wouldn't expect Academy to do anything for you, they don't carry the LH excelers.
I'd try to trade it on a forum for the LH version (Texasfishingforum, bbcboards.net, tackletour.com).
I must warn though, forum trades/prices is a black hole that will suck you in and make you spend gobs of money if you let it...I'm 4 days clean of my last deal

ULMaggie
lol, yeah i don't know if i will go the trade route but the thought did cross my mind.
----
I think in the end I am going to see who carries the excelers and just call around to see if anyone will exchange a LH reel for a standard one. Figure if i call around enough someone may want to get rid of a LH one and replace it with a standard one. It is at least worth a shot.
After that I may just call Diawa and see if i can simply trade it in for a left handed model? A long shot but worth a call.
After that i will just have to learn to reel with my right hand and set the hook with my left...and then end up using the new rod as a gift. Hahaha

I all else fails sell it on eBay and buy a left handed one there. You can usually get left handed reels on eBay cheaper because they're harder to sell. I bought a lot of my reels there, mostly brand new.

Left hand retrieve is the only way to go, I would look very foolish if I tried to set the hook left handed.
re: Baitcast reel question (Left Handed)Posted by Boats n Hose on 3/27/12 at 7:13 pm to sloopy
I would look the same If I tried to do anything but cast and reel with my right hand. I can work the bait much better with my left. I can kinda cast with my left, but I'm more accurate with my right.
re: Baitcast reel question (Left Handed)Posted by sloopy on 3/27/12 at 7:18 pm to Boats n Hose
I feel like I may be able to get away with it but i figured I grew up reeling left handed on a spinning reel therefore I have bought left handed retrieving curados. Never really tried to retrieve right handed, so who really knows.

Whatever works for you. Wish I could cast as well with my left hand as my right, to avoid the switching of hands.

As a noob on the baitcast scene, i prefer left handed reels. Like you said, much smoother & efficient.
