Our family has just gotten a camp/boat out at 3 Mile Lake near Port Barre and we are kind of lost as far as the fishing part goes. (Did a lot of fishing when we were young, but forgot much over the last 20 years) Question is, what are the majors that we need to have in the tackle box to fish this area? Mainly bass/socalay/catfish is what we are hearing. Catfish are pretty straight forward, but I was wondering about different baits and lures that would come in handy with these fish. TIA

I'd ask the locals since you now have a camp there.

For bass fishing I'd start off with:

Spinnerbait
- Humdinger 1/4 oz; Blue/White/Chartreuse with a Willow Leaf Blade

Plastic Worm
- Rigged Texas Style (google or youtube it).
- Zoom U Tail Worm - Red Shad
- Zoom Trick Worm - Junebug
- Zoom Baby Brush Hog - Watermelon Red

Crankbait
- Bandit 100 Series (Bluegill, Crawfish, Louisiana Shad, Tennessee Shad)
- Bandit 300 Series

Topwater Bait
- Buzzbait

For sac-au-lait:
Tube jigs under a cork or shiners.

Slickback's suggestion was very good.

I would add Beetle Spins to that list. Get a few sizes/colors since they are fairly cheap.

If it has been a while i would go with live bait under a cork, you just can't go wrong with that approach. Live minnows, crickets, crawfish, worms are all good choices.

Truth! The good thing is I live in Breaux Bridge and the back roads let me almost avoid the town altogether.

Thanks for all the advise. We are all excited being it's been so long away from the water. I know it's going to take time to know what the hell I am doing, but hopefully I can catch a few in the process.

I like Slickback's list, but I'm going to add to it

Plastic Worm
- Rigged Texas Style (google or youtube it).
- Zoom U Tail Worm or Culprit worm - Red Shad/green flake and Tequila Sunrise
- Zoom Trick Worm and/or Finesse Worm - Junebug, Watermelon Red, Plum, Sapphire Blue
- Zoom Baby Brush Hog - Watermelon Red

Crankbait
- Bandit 100 Series (Bluegill, Crawfish, Louisiana Shad, Tennessee Shad)
- Bandit 300 Series

Topwater Bait
- Buzzbait
- Stanley Ribit frog[/u]

For sac-au-lait:
TRIPLE TAIL GRUBS or shiners under a cork or live shiners. Colors for artificials for sacalait - blue/white, black/chartruese, black/pink

I rig all texas rigs with 1/8 bullet weight and 3/0 extra wide gap (EWG) hook, I like either owner or gamakatsu because they're thinner.

For sacalait use those little gold hooks for shiners or crickets or nightcrawlers and I usually have a mix of 1/32 and 1/16 oz jigheads for the triple tails, depending on the wind and whether I'm using a cork or not. I like weightless snap on cigar corks for bream and sacalait, but everyone you talk to has a different cork they like best, so it's really up to you.
