Drew Brees now holds all the cards, including the HC card

I had a good chuckle at the thread that this is somehow Roger Goodell's payback against Drew Brees for the CBA negotiations or something, because there's probably no one happier about this situation than Tom Condon.
The one thing that Benson absolutely cannot allow to happen is for Drew Brees to leave New Orleans. With all the other uncertainties, Benson needs to lock Drew up with a contract to give Saints fans hope for the future. Drew is in a much stronger negotiating position now, and he's going to get more money as a result.
Ultimately, I think the question about whether Sean Payton gets fired or not is really not up to Tom Benson. It's up to Drew Brees. If Brees wants Payton to stay, he'll stay.

I'm not one for ownership passing the buck to a player so much that the player gets blamed for "his" coach turning out to be a flop or "his" free agent acquirements not panning out (even the Bulls told MJ "no" on a few FA "demands"), but I'd definitely feel Brees out a bit here.
In any coaching hire, ability to attract free agents and keep a solid core is a positive attribute you want in your new guy. No different here. The coach Brees wants is probably a good coach, and therefore a good hire.

If Drew is the man he claims to be in his book he'd realize the franchise and community need him more than ever. Instead of using this for leverage he'd step up and help rebuild the Saints again. That's what a leader would do. That's what Tom Brady would do.

I don't have anything bad to say about Brady. I just find it odd this guy tries to compare him and Brees so often.
And for the record, it's not like Brady is forgetting about that money. It just means he will get it next year and the year after.

His point was a complete failure. Reduced salary and brought it over to a guaranteed signing bonus. WOOPTY.

Yeah, I noticed that after I posted the first time. He's just moving this year's salary to the bonus and into the 2013 and 2014 salary.

Yes, he did. He deferred what would be owed him now. That is, in effect giving the club an interest free loan (unless he worked it to receive more at the back end).

If salary is converted to a signing bonus to stretch the same amount of money over the length of the contract, wouldn't he get the money now rather than later? I believe the player is the one getting the interest free loan in these cases.

He scaled off 4.8 million that instead of being pro-rated into a 16 game weekly pay check, he'll get it lump some immediately after the season on Feb. 13. Now his team has 7 million plus this year to make the patriots a better team to help tom brady help his own legacy because he took a 4-5 month interest free loan to the patriots. Oh my, mother fricking theresa step aside.

Apples and Oranges. He makes a hell of a lot more money than me, so he can afford that

Brees helped us a lot by simply playing out his contract and not bitching about it. Not many players would do that. He wants to get his money now considering this might be his final chance to do so. Can't say I blame him.
