There is about a million options. Maybe a little more description of what you want? For the price go buy a knock off AK-47 and get cheap ammunition. You kind find the rifles for $350-$500. If you look hard enough. They are also easy to take care of.

I'm not familiar with this type of weapon really. Want something smooth and accurate with a nice rail system. $800-$1500 price range. AR's, Ak's, anything like that. I know most people are homers but just trying to see which ones are worth going look at. I wanted a Bushmaster but I've heard they have had a recall recently so idk

You will not get smooth or accurate with an AK, however an AR would be fine. Unless you want to build your own I like Rock River. You may here different from others though. If you want a rifle you don't have to clean as much sig has a pretty good piston driven system. If your looking for cheap operation get a 22 if you want a 5.56 order ammo in bulk. A couple of my buddies converted their AR's to 9mm. They are fun as hell to shoot. A little cheaper too.

Nothing smooth about an AK, but it will go bang with the bolt de-railed and a bullet wedged in the trigger mechanism. Seent it happen.

Plus they are happy being cleaned with a shoestring with knots tied in it coated in used motor oil. Would not recommend it though.

It all depends on what you want to spend.

If I wanted something "tactical" I would go for an AR10/SASS type .308 with a long barrel. Talk about kicking arse and taking names.

Knight SR-25
DPMS SASS type
Larue Tactical
Les Baer

And the best one IMO

Those are in no way shape or form anything that he is looking for by the sounds of his post. It sounds like he is a novice shooter looking for something to plink with. A .308 is not for plinking around the camp. Not unless you are a millionaire.

Rock River Arms and DSARMS make a 308 as well. The DSARMS is the FN-FAL rifle.
Springfield Armory will also feature a 308.

There are so many choices now for ARs. Great time to be shopping IMO. Prices for a bunch of guns have skyrocketed over the last ten years though.

If I were getting one today with the OP price range- I would look at Piston Driven over Gas.

I have some buyer remorse over getting the 5.56 as well. But mine is "end of world" gun and I wanted common ammo. Originally got a 6.8 but traded. I don't really find the 5.56 round to be my favorite. I think a "do-over" would see me with a 308.

Very nice taste then! All listed are rifles that indefinitely have my full attention when I am lucky enough to be in their presence....I have been looking at getting a Les Baer that is what my gunsmith has as a shorter varmint rifle.

Lol Nah, not a novice. Just not familiar with non hunting firearms. Several of my friends have been looking into these and I've never really been interested in them until we we and shot some rounds. They have some of the lower end ones so I was just trying to get an idea of what you guys with experience with this type of firearm would recommend. Thanks a lot for all you guys help!

I would also be tempted to look at Daniel Defense. They are really coming on strong in the AR market. I have a rock river and love it however I am hearing mixed things coming out of their plant that QC isn't as good as it was say five years ago.

To do this on the cheap:

KelTec Sub 2000

Get it in 9mm with a couple of 30 round Glock mags and go to work.

Hard to do this on the cheap, but they are the $hit:
