Non Saints Fans: General Thoughts on Yesterday's Announcements
Posted on 3/21/12 at 1:35 pm
Posted on 3/21/12 at 1:35 pm
Things I'm surprised about:
- I'm surprised Williams wasn't banned from football as he seemed to be the mastermind behind this
- I'm surprised no players (Vilma + Harper) were suspended; however, those could still be coming
- I'm surprised that Payton got a whole year. Thought he'd get around 10 games. He's the head man in charge, so I understand it.
- I'm really surprised more/higher draft picks weren't taken.
All in All, I think it was a pretty spot on punishment.
Saints' management basically payed players to intentionally injure opposing players. I don't see how Saints fans are bitching about Spygate when this is much much worse and more dangerous.
I don't see how Payton keeps his job? Thoughts on his future with the Saints?
Expected punishments for players?

I thought franchise as whole would be fined
6-8 games for Sean
A few player suspensions
Knew NFL would come down hard and make them the example but NFL came down with iron fist today, was actually worse than I assumed

Every team does this who cares

I'm happy, but it should've been harsher.

Didn't this happen too?

From the official NFL report over on Saints Talk, it basically says his reinstatement will be based upon his level of cooperation with the investigators.
My guess is this is just the beginning of it all.

My guess - what I think is reasonable in light of the evidence:
Williams: 2 seasons then seek reinstatement - probably would be blacklisted anyway
Payton: 8 games and $1MM fine
Loomis: 4 games and 25% of annual salary (whatever that is)
Vitt: 4 games & 25% of annual salary
Players: no specifics mentioned in report (except Vilma)
Vilma 8 games
Others 4 games
Team: $1MM and entire 2012 draft

Harsher? What should have been the suspensions in your opinion?

My initial thoughts were that the punishment may have been too severe, but reading through the PDF, it's pretty damning. Not shocking why they came down like they did.

they weren't paid to injure players. They were paid if a player was injured within the context of the game.

The rational side of me thinks it was a little over the top and the Saints are being made an example of. The Falcons/Cowboys fan side of me is lapping up the taint tears.

Dan,
Can you link me the PDF? I'd love to read over it.
Also, chances Payton is fired? I say 85%

+1. Seemed like a lot initially, but when you look at the circumstances it's not.
Saints fans seem to be acting like the team is being punished for encouraging players to play harder. But they're being punished for directly disobeying the NFL.
I'm having trouble figuring out how people can think that this isn't that big of a deal, but I guess they're blinded by fandom.

Did it? Did I miss that part?
The money they saving by not paying Sean/Loomis can pay that

We'll have to see the player suspensions, before getting an idea of the overall treatment of the issue.
So far, relatively light. I'm pretty sure Payton wouldn't have gotten a year, if he had cooperated fully-- so that's about him, as much as it was about the system.

The Falcons have beaten the Saints TWICE under the Payton administration. The Saints are 10-2

Agreed
I though 2012 2nd + 2013 first and second

Exactly my thoughts. The Saints fans have nobody to blame except for Payton, Williams, etc. Don't break the rules and you don't get punished.
