"Our Computers Are Down"...

Afternoon All,
A few nights ago, I was in Baton Rouge and grabbed a late dinner at The Chimes...
When we finished, we couldn't figure out why the waitress wasn't bringing our check...like 20 minutes had passed, and they never even took the plates off our table.
Finally, we were told, "We're so sorry, but our computers are down. If you can just wait a little longer for your check..."
We waited probably 10 more minutes, but nothing happened. I had to get on the road to New Orleans, so I left cash with a friend of mine who lives up there. He ended up waiting like another 15 minutes after we bailed.
Should they have comp'd a drink or two? Something else?
Just wondering if this has happened to anyone else!

I would have walked. That is their problem.

Crossed my mind, of course, but I'm a big karma person...

If I needed to leave, I would have asked that they manually computer my bill and left cash for that total. Otherwise, I would guestimate it as best I could and left cash.
Another option is to have them take my name to identify my check and I would call back and pay by CC via phone and request the receipt be faxed or emailed to me.
I would not walk out without attempting to pay first.

Say it isn't so, Brock!
It would never cross my mind. If I did that, it would haunt me.

I was being dramatic. But if they can't bring you a bill 30 minutes after you ask I'd have left cash if I had it and it would be short...not generous.

Dumb. It is your problem. Leaving without paying is theft.

Would've pissed me off too, but at that point, there really isn't much you can do except ask for a written bill.

So how long is too long? What if it took two hours? Serious question.

It is not your responsibility to receive a bill, or to pay cash on that visit if they advertise taking credit cards. You are responsible for the bill but like with alot of business transactions you can give them your info and they can bill you, or like previous post where you give CC# over phone later. I don't carry cash. If I had to leave, I would tell waitor/manager what I'm doing and left my contact info.

Yep and I wouldn't cut the bill either unless I thought the tip wasn't earned for one reason or another. That's just cheap. Everyone in the working world needs the money right now and these folks were working to earn it just like I do. You gonna stiff them because the electricity goes out and you can get a free meal out of the deal? I would not.
We live in a computer world and going offline is NOT usually OUR problem. It happens. Happens at my office usually when AT&T goes down or whatever the provider, but thankfully our consumers are not cheap and dishonest.
I do believe, however, that the staff should have been instructed to alert the customers and some quick back up plans should have been discussed and offered to those customers who could not wait for a bill to be printed. That's the manager's job. We have a back up for handling things in the event of computer problems.

Actually, I should have clarified, GG. When we were left alone for 20 minutes with no explanation, I thought that I might have been bestowed with an amazing, free gift. But then I reconsidered, and didn't think I was that lucky.

I have a feeling that a lot of people could never itemize something by hand.

They definitely should have comped a drink or dessert or something.
But you handled like you should.

But it's their problem to find a way to accept payment, in a reasonable amount of time.

If you couldn't stay to pay the bill, then you wouldn't have had time for that free dessert.

Exactly. This is what people with common sense and good morals do as opposed to running out on the bill and getting all excited over copping a free meal.

Meh. shite happens. I would have left cash if I needed/wanted to leave. There are ATMs in The Chimes. If I was unsure of my total, I'd grab a menu and add it up and pay.
I think it would have been nice to offer something complimentary, but I wouldn't be displeased that they didn't. At some point, I look at it and say I know they're a customer service industry, but sometimes things happen beyond people's control and they don't "owe" me anything for it.
If the computer system goes down at WalMart while you're in line, are you going to take your things and leave with them? No. You're either going to leave some cash for the items (and this is only if they allow you to do so without them ringing it up) or you're not going to buy the items at all or you're going to wait. And I assure you WalMart won't be giving you anything free for the wait.
Obviously this is a little different since the items at the restaurant had already been consumed, but it's just not something I'd get upset over. Maybe I'm too laid back. Most thread I've seen lately with complaints are things I wouldn't get upset over.

I was eating lunch at a cafe in jasper tx a few weeks ago and the electricity went out. They comped everyone's meal.
