With all the debate onTJ, I thought it may be fun to look back at initial reaction to when he was hired.

Good find

I was on board with the hire then and I think most people agreed it was a good hire

Oh well

I'll admit, I thought our program would be in better shape four years down the road. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Brady never even went three consecutive seasons without making the NCAA tournament during his time at LSU.

Overwhelming majority approved.

Lester Earl and SPEEDY said we could do better.

I still think he has us on the track for sustained mediocrity with the occasional tournament run. Not sure if that will keep him his job forever or not.

TigerJohn seemed to hit it:
quote:

I heard that he wasn't am amazing recruiter but part of that had to do with the fact he was recruiting players to come to Stanford which is tough. He isn't going to be a guy who is going to be a rah rah guy. He feels that the performance on the court should speak for itself. He was allegedly only making 600,000-700,000 at Stanford. He was wanting a new deal done but Stanford was stalling. He may make almost double what he made there. It had to be mostly a financial move considering he's a lifelong west coast guy

We're finding out Stanford wasn't the recruiting obstacle, though.

If he could just lock up Louisiana we could be good consistently.

Another great entry from LSU5803:

and if we go to the ncaa tournament next season, the same people who are complaining about him now will swear he is the 2nd coming of Jesus Christ.

I don't think he's capable of locking up U-High.

Who cares what anyone thought about the hire the day of? If we hired Mike Krzyzewski (yes I had to look that up) tomorrow and 4 years from now he had the same or worse record he'd still be on the hook for doing a bad job.

Bottom line is that he has done a terrible job recruiting and frankly does a pretty poor job at "coaching up" the players he does have.

I'm really not sure who on the board was saying it, but its absolutely correct. Joe Alleva needs to ask himself; if you had the foresight of knowing the results of the last four years mixed with the overall state of the program prior to hiring TJ, would you have still made the hire?

wow did this stanford fan nail it....

quote:

As a stanford fan, I can only say good riddance to that shitty coach. LSU fans, enjoy timeouts called too late to stop runs, timeouts right before media timeouts, an incomprehensible rotation (you know the worst player on your team...get more familiar), and, of course, a stagnant ugly offense.

Some of these are looking pretty prophetic now four years later...

tigerbball73 (posted 4/9/08): "he has no ties to teh south his recruitting base is all west coast so oce again we will have another coach who cant keep Louisiana players in Louisiana"

otowntiger (posted 4/9/08): "I don't see him being a great salesman for LSU basketball. I hope he can connect with the fans, because frankly that was the main reason Brady was fired. If we just wanted a solid coach and a recruiter, we could have settled for Piere. I for one am not enthused, but I really want to be wrong."

calihaze (posted 4/9/08): "Trent Johnson is definitely not on the same coaching level as Miles or Saban. LSU hoops fans will be longing for the Final Four run of Brady after a few of those 18-13 seasons Johnson is known for"

and calihaze again (still on 4/9/08): "...Or at least you will be counting down the minutes to the football opener during the upcoming run of mediocrity that Johnson brings. Very average recruiter who got the Lopez Twins only because they had always wanted to go to Stanford. NIT or Bust!!!"

Pinchdatail (quoting a Stanford fan from another board): "As a stanford fan, I can only say good riddance to that shitty coach. LSU fans, enjoy timeouts called too late to stop runs, timeouts right before media timeouts, an incomprehensible rotation (you know the worst player on your team...get more familiar), and, of course, a stagnant ugly offense"

saints63213 (posted on 4/9/08): "the question you should ask your self if you were a high school basketball player like Greg Monroe would a guy like Trent Johnson make you stay home and play at LSU?

I would say no I could pass him up and go elsewhere"

And some...well, less prophetic...

Prominentwon (posted 4/9/08 in response to saints63213): "good thing you're not Greg Monroe."

budlight34 (posted 4/9/08): "the guy won at Stanford and Nevada, i repeat, Stanford and Nevada!. LSU will be a consistent participant in the tourney with this guy"
