Panthers signed RB Mike Tolbert to a four-year contract.

Let the Jonathan Stewart trade speculation begin. Tolbert is an adept short-yardage runner and big contributor in the passing game, but his signing is curious for a team that already has Stewart, DeAngelo Williams and Mike Goodson under contract. Regardless of whether or not Stewart is retained, Tolbert should be in for far fewer snaps than he played in San Diego, and may not even be a consistent goal-line option with QB Cam Newton thriving in the role last year. A fringe fantasy option outside of PPR leagues last season, Tolbert could have a hard time finding value in 2012.

per Rotoworld

It appears the Panthers are going for broke with the running game. Not sure how this will work out unless a trade goes through. Might be tough to defend for the B&G.

That's a good signing for them. He's a poor, fat man's Darren Sproles.

I'm not happy about that at all.

Good for the fricking Panthers.

That's actually a good description of him. Good in the passing game and plays special teams. Not a returner, but still. I like Tolbert and thought he'd go somewhere better. Hate that I have to root against him now.

this signing makes zero sense to me.

Stewart is there best back IMO.

Really? I thought he did return kicks. Maybe I just heard special teams and assumed it was for returning.

I watched him a bit in presseason. He looked fat, but he was running routes and catching balls. He didn't seem slow to me.

he is a great short yardage back. I have seen zero elusiveness from him. just a steam-roller.

they might be able to get a 3rd or 4th round pick for him? at best.

I don't get this move at all, Stewart is easily better than Tolbert IMO.

Because when I think of the problems the Panthers have, it's at RB.

What is wrong with those people?

Jonathan Stewart - RB - Panthers "Multiple team sources" tell the Charlotte Observer that Jonathan Stewart is "unlikely" to be traded despite the Panthers' addition of Mike Tolbert.

The Panthers will face a tough decision when Stewart enters 2013 free agency, but for now they're poised to keep him along with DeAngelo Williams and Tolbert. Tolbert will likely shoulder some of the load on passing downs, and cover kicks on special teams. Stewart and Williams will be the primary backs. The Panthers could consider cutting Williams and re-signing Stewart next offseason, although releasing DeAngelo would cause a roughly $5 million cap hit in 2013.

Cover kicks, not return them. Tolbert is a very good 3rd down back in the passing game and a short yardage situation. I don't see any way they could keep all 3.

I would expect to see him lined up as the full back a bunch. You would have to account for his pass catching ability from that position.

Carolina running the Wishbone now, ~100M in the RB position makes this happen.

Saints have four running baços. Worked well last year, especially since Ingram went down. Carolina probably took notice.
