Jared Sullinger

Wanted to share this little write up I did:
I watched Sullinger closely today. Here's what I came away with, remember this is just what I saw today:
He's a bull. Very physical inside on both ends. Especially on defense though, always moving and pushing his man out of the post (or trying atleast). He gets low in rebounding position, especially when boxing out. Really good form. He has a good wingspan for his size (7'1). He does a good job fighting for rebound position and battles for boards. Has good range on his shot, went 2/2 from behind the arc in the first 3 minutes of the game, and also hit a mid range shot. He is shooting 41% behind the arc this year compared to just 25% last year. Was doubled in the post a number of times and showed good composure and passing skills out of the double. One particular time he posting up and got doubled at the short corner, and was able to find a teammate behind the left side of the arc wide open. Good vision out of the post.
When he wasn't in the post he was around the top of the key screening then popping the ball. Poor screens really stood out, for a guy so strong and physical I thought this would have been a better part of his game, but it wasn't. Rarely made contact and left before the ball got there a few times. When he was in the low post, he really didn't try to get position a number of times. Was called for traveling in the low post a few times, uses the step through move more than he should. Didn't show enough variety in the low post. You could tell he was a little frustrated throwing up a few bad looks while he had trouble getting looks over the 7'0 foot Sacre. His energy could be a lot better, was ineffective running the floor and his rotations were very bad. Stockton was able to get into the lane and dish out because of this. Hedged on ball screens a number of times, and that will be a problem in the NBA. Just not quick enough, the Zag's bigs had a number of open looks after rolling but their guards never found them. Not a threat to block shots or alter shots.

He's David West 2.0 and we need more than a David West in this draft. I'll take a David West with the Minny pick but not our pick.

Sullinger and West are nothing alike. If they redid the '03 draft based on their careers West would go at worst #6. The guys who'd go #1-4 are maybe the 2nd greatest combo of talent in a draft in NBA history. There might be 2 or 3 players in this draft who end up with a career as good as West.

I thought Rob Sacre from Gonzaga destroyed Sullinger today. Sacre dominated him in every facet of the game IMO.

I agree, Darko Millicic is really good.

Nice write up.
DraftExpress guy thought something was off for him today and was wondering if Sullinger was hurt today.

Jonathan Givony ? @DraftExpress Close
Seeing Jared Sullinger's lack of aggressiveness on the glass and how upright he looks at all times, I have to wonder if he's 100% healthy?

Folks, Sullinger is one of the best rebounders in the NCAA. If he isn't even pursuing loose balls, there's a reason to wonder what's up

I know, it was a joke.

People have been sleeping on Sullinger this whole time and they'll continue to do so because his highlights aren't flashy.
Im telling you he's Kevin Love when he was coming out

Maybe when he was coming out, but he will never be the Kevin Love of today.

But there's NOBODY on Earth that thought Love would be this good

He went head to head up against Robert Sacre who is arguably a late 1st round to early 2nd round NBA pick and Sullinger was dominated. I would take Sacre before I picked Sullinger.

Love's a better passer and Sullinger's shorter. How much shorter could matter a great deal in the NBA.

I watched Sully today and came away very unimpressed. He really had problems with the length of Sacre. He doesn't have the mid range jumper to take a taller player away from the basket either. I see him having problems at the next level due to his height. I would not draft him if I were the Hornets with either pick.

I saw him make one at the beginning. Along with two 3 pointers. But I agree I don't really want Sulli with our first pick

Sullinger is 6'8. Sacre is 7'0.

Well he's got the best shoe lifts in basketball cause he measured 2 inches taller in shoes.
In a related draft note: Royce White is giving it to Anthony Davis right now

"Sullinger is listed at 6-9 by some scouting services and 6-8 by others. He actually appears to be only slightly taller than the Buckeyes' 6-7 forward Deshaun Thomas. Sullinger weighs 265 pounds or therabouts, down 15 from his freshman season. He will have trouble with Sacre's length and bulk."
