A 738-pound Pacific bluefin tuna described by angler Nathan Adams as a "fish of a lifetime" may also be the largest Pacific bluefin ever landed on rod and reel.

The catch was made aboard an 18-foot boat during a recent competition off Houhora in New Zealand. If it's approved by the International Game Fish Assn., it will set an all-tackle world record, replacing a 716-pound 8-ounce Pacific bluefin landed off Westport, New Zealand, in 2007.

in the grand scheme of things that one fish is nothing compared to what the longliners and seiners are doing.

The BIG kicker is that it was cought out of a 18' BOAT. All balls and no brains I would say.

There haven't been seiners in the U.S. in over 25 years and the longliners don't really catch much in the U.S on bluefin. They have 1 a trip limits also from what I remember.

Outside of the U.S is where most of the damage is done.

That's huge for a Pacific Blue. The record Atlantic Blue is twice that size though. An 1100 lber was caught in the GOB about 5 years ago.

Is Pacific Bluefin is a different species from any other Bluefin? That's a big fish by any account but didn't they catch one in the Gulf like 10 years ago or so that was over 1400 lbs. I believe it's the largest fish ever caught in the Gulf on a rod and reel.

And this wasn't in the U.S. And it doesn't take much to get into "international" waters...
