I have no access to a computer for a day or so, but is the Saga (films in chronological order) now available for purchase? Watching it on AMC. Damn, I love it.

Are you asking if you can purchase the Godfather Trilogy?

Yes.

I think you can buy The Godfather Saga but I wouldn't recommend it. It edits a lot of the more violent scenes out and puts it all in chronological order (ie young Corleone's scenes are shown first). Just buy the whole trilogy and watch it the way it originally was.

I never knew this came from NBC TV. Read through https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Godfather_Saga to get a clearer idea of what you are hunting for.

I have “The Godfather 1902–1959: The Complete Epic” on VHS. It has extra scenes that came from the book, but were not in the original movies. The color and size of the subtitles are different along with a couple of other things, it was obviously added in after the original editing. I don’t remember the violence being edited, but haven’t seen it in 20 years or so.

It seems that “The Godfather Trilogy: 1901-1980” is the chronological version you are looking for. Anyway, look at the details closely before you buy or you will end up with just a box set.

Yeah, I hate the fact that its edited down a lil, but I like the design of it as a miniseries and would like to loan it to a couple of friends who would respond better to a miniseries rather than the trilogy. I have all 3...they don't leave my house, but the saga I'd be happy to loan.

Ok I see. I wasn't aware they made a chronological saga. I don't think I would want to watch it that way.

Its good for people who watched only 1-2 times or catch pieces of it.

I just noticed they didnt have the final scene in 2 with Michael telling Sonny he enlisted in the Marines. I wonder why they would leave that out.

Yeah, they edit out stupid shite sometimes. I don't rmrmber the scene where they visit the dying Genco during the wedding, tho. They mustve put in extra stuff, too.

speaking of the Godfather edit- I which movie did they show Michael getting revenge on the guy that killed his first wife? The bomb in the pizza parlor.

I agree, kinda like if you watched pulp fiction in order, just doesn't have the same effect

That scene doesn't make a lot of sense show chronologically, it does as a flashback. The movie would be going from when DeNiro leaves Sicily after killing Don Ciccio to that scene to the wedding 4 years later.

They add a lot of scenes when they show it like this.

What did Michael do to be a "war hero"? I haven't read the books, and I don't remember it being mentioned in the movie.

I like some of the added scenes.

I like the one where Michael and the Don are talking in the back yard.

Don Vito: "I promissed I would not be the one to break the peace"

Michael: "You promissed, I did not promiss. I'll take full responsibility, you do not have to be involved."

Don Vito: "Well, we have a long tim to talk about it" (smiles)

A good bit of foreshadowing there.

Also, the dialogue between Tom Hagen and Michael and the Don when he finds out he is no longer Consigliere (building a secret army).....Good stuff.

"I think you have found your Luca Brazzi"...."I think I'll need him".

It might be time for me to re-read these books.

Question for the old folks. Those who can remember when 1 and 2 came out (1972 and 1974). I was born in 1973.

What did Italians think of the movie? Did it come with any backlash? 1972 was still a time when the mafia was active. Did Italians hate it? Did mobsters hate it? Was the Italian spoken and subtitled in the movie ridiculed? It sounds pretty slow and silly. Which I know was for the understanding of an American audience. The scene with Solazzo is cool that it is NOT subtitled but is in Italian and you can pretty much understand it and its context.

Basically do/did Italians think of this movie the way we (coonasses) think of Swamp People?

ETA I am NOT mocking The Godfather BTW. 1 and 2 are like Goodfellas to me in that I love them and will always stop what I am doing and watch when they are on.

My Italian friends (1st and second generation) generally think it is a great movie. I know nobody who ridicules any part of it.

Was wondering. The Italian parts seem a little slow and silly/simple.

The Italian-American League, as well as real mobsters, highly protested the film being made. They put a lot of pressure on Paramount I believe. They couldn't use the words "mafia" or "cosa nostra" in the movie. Also, Sinatra got really pissed at Puzo bc Sinatra believed that Fontaine's character was based on him, & he wanted the part. Several scenes w/Fintaine were cut bc of this.
