So I was at my FFL about to buy the RRA AR15 that I wanted when he basically told me why it was overrated and tried to talk me into a stag, bushy, or a S&W. Stag was my second choice.
Admittedly, I don't know much on the subject so I came here for opinions. So stag 2t or RRA tac op II and why? Please spare the "build your own" or "get a colt". Thanks

DDT,

I have heard a lot of good things about RRA, but I have never owned one so I will not directly vouch for one.

However, I do have the Stag Arms, Model 7L (L-Left handed) in 6.8 spc. It can really shoot. I will vouch for accuracy, but I have yet to really put it through a durability test.
It shipped to me with the gas tube mounted slightly off (clock-wise). It was a really easy fix I was able to do on my own and it has shot very, very well since the first cartridge.

I would argue that RRA had one of the best products out there 5-7 years ago and that they have gone down on quality. Stag has worked really hard to make better rifles and I like where they are going.

Either way, I don't think you will make a bad choice.

I have a RRA from 2005. I think it is called the Tactical Elite (Flat Top)in Mid Range. Solid Rifle IMO. It is the only AR I have ever owned, and I don't know enough about other ARs to compare. I am happy with mine, and it seems well built/manufactured.

If you are in Houston, I will let you shoot it this week.

I just bought the new sig m400. It's sweet for a gas operated AR.

All AR's aren't gas operated? Sorry if this is a dumb question, I haven't looked into them very much at all.

most ar's are gas operated (direct impingement ) which means it uses the gas going down the barrel to operate the bolt. piston ar's are cleaner because the gas operates the piston to cycle the bolt. piston ar's run cleaner and cooler but cost more$$$$

Alright that's what I was thinking. Just got confused for a sec. The piston ARs are short stroke piston as opposed to long stroke like in an AK, correct?

I've been doing a lot of research lately online and I think I may be going for the Stag Arms 2TL one day. I've heard nothing but great things about that gun and the company itself.

Where can I find the best deal on that gun though?

I just took a look at the RRA TAC OP 2 and that looks like a badass gun too.

If I remember right, I think the biggest dig on RRA is that they're not "Mil-spec." They choose to take a different path in design... which isn't necessarily a bad thing. I've heard nothing but good feedback in my experience.

I have a Rock River and a Bushmaster. I prefer the Rock River. Both are great rifles.

Not to hijack, but curious about the 6.8...

Is it basically a bit larger of a round with more stopping power than the .223 and better ballistics than the 7.62x39?

I've had a RRA now for over a year haven't had a single issue. Solid, well put together and accurate. It does have a commercial tube but that hasn't been an issue.

I bought a 6.8 a week before I traded it in and got the 5.56 RRA. The 6.8 was impossible to find ammo for when I purchased it. I am talking about being able to get 5 bullets at a store. It will run off a 5.56 lower and the cartridges will fit in a 5.56 magazine. 30 rd magazine will hold 20 6.8 rounds. I think you need a new follower also.

It is an upgrade with ballistic performance on the 5.56 from what I have read. I am not a know everything about this topic, but as a civilian- the cost of operating a 6.8 is costlier and I don't do CQB with my AR.

I want a 308 in an AR platform. I think it is a better value and more cost effective to shoot as a civilian. I think it will run on FN/FAL magazines.

The difference in the Mil-spec and the commercial-spec is the buffer tube diameter.
