So I don't hunt but enjoy shooting and I am looking for a new caliber of gun to start shooting.
Preferably something that is cheap to buy and ammo is on the cheaper side.

I currently have a .22 and a 30-30.

Thanks.

If you have a .22 than you already have the absolute best caliber available for just blasting random stuff.

If you have a specific purpose in mind then it changes. Handgun? Long range rifle? Trap gun?

I've always wanted to get a .22 target pistol...just never have pulled the trigger.

And you'll need at least 23 miles of openness down range. Terminal range on the '08 is a wonder of modern science

I was looking more Long Range Rifle.

I have a Glock 23 also, but that is more for Concealed Carry and whatnot

Remington makes a pretty great long range platform in the 700SPS varmint in .308

It's a nice gun out the box, pretty cheap, and gives you a great platform to build on if you want to improve it. From what I have read, a $250 stock turns it into a legitimate 800 yard rifle with good glass on top.

How long range are you talking? If you aren't meaning 800 or 1000 yds I would go with the .223 just because ammo is so cheap

You can get a .223 or a .308 rifle fairly cheap, depending on the brand. The .223 has a lead about the size of a normal .22 bullet but it is centerfire and the casing is larger and filled with more powder. It's going to be your cheapest bet. Take a look at the Ruger Mini 14 on the ruger website. They're a nice gun for the price and you can get a bunch of different styles. The .308 would be a little more expensive (gun and rounds) but I've seen plenty of them used in 1000 yard competitions.

.22 is the cheapest, and very fun to shoot.

For long range shooting I'd recommend a .308 in a Remingtion 700. Lots of aftermarket parts and adjustments that can be made. Lot of ammo and some that is relatively inexpensive.

.223 is also a good caliber. You can buy a bolt gun or AR style rifle. Good at long ranges as well, lower recoil, and wide selection of ammo with cheaper options.
