We never really close. The gates are always manned, as supporting the ISS is a 24/7 gig. Individual areas open and close though, i.e. Building 9 and the mock up area, but everything will be "open" on that Thurs and Fri. Sat and Sun will be pretty quiet.
Space Center Houston is also a great place to bring the kids (next door to JSC).
